Hello,
This is my first post, but I have looked extensively online and on this forum for the answer to my question but have not found it. I recently broke my clavicle September 2, 2018, the day after I started my West Point application. As such, I had not scheduled or attended my medical exam. I have filled out most of my application and now have the option to schedule my exams. While the vision exam will be no problem, I am wondering what I should do for my medical exam. I have three questions:
1. I read that you can take the physical if you have a minor illness, would a broken clavicle qualify as that?
2. If not, when would be the time to schedule a physical. Once I am cleared by my orthopedist for all activities?
3. Lastly, one of my congressional members has DoDMERB exam taken on his nomination application checklist with a deadline of October 30; will I have to submit a remedial even if I do wait until I am cleared by my orthopedist? If I do, I will focus completely on the other nomination opportunities as I do not expect to take the physical and submit a remedial in time for the October 30 deadline.
Thank you and sorry if a similar question has been submitted elsewhere on this forum regarding current injuries and DoDMERB exams.

My 2021 son had his physical 2 days before a shoulder surgery. Having the physical before the surgery allowed him to work through one remedial for an unrelated concern and start the waiting period. He had the surgery early August and was cleared for all activity in November. One academy waived him in October for the shoulder and the other waited till January. Had he waited for the exam until November, he would have been pressed for time in the remedial and waiver process. Not sure if I answered any of your questions but completing the exam early is helpful and applying for all the nominations you can is imperative.

Thank you for the response, and I understand that I should have done the exam earlier, but I already broke my clavicle and just got the option to schedule now. I would like to take the exam now to have maximum time for remedials/waivers, but am not sure if they would let me schedule one when I am not cleared by my orthopedist yet. Would I have to be cleared or can I schedule one now?

My son was mid injury - knew there was a torn labrum and other issues with his shoulder and he has no problem completing the exam. He wasn't cleared by his ortho until November. He had his exam August. Call DODMETS and ask. Everyone my son spoke to was helpful. Son was under care of his sports med orthos from mid July until at least November. His exam was the first week of August while under the care of a team of orthos. Good luck! Healing thoughts!

PS - I was not implying that you should have done the exam earlier. You cannot control that aspect.

Ok I will call DODMETS and ask if I can schedule one and hopefully get a head start on remedials. As long as I don't need clearance I should be able to perform all of the physical exam. I was going to just wait but after reading this it sounds like the earlier the better. Thanks again for the help it is a confusing process and I appreciate that people who have done it in the past are willing to help.
