Current NAPSter, ask anything!

I would argue that the SAT is virtually meaningless if you get straight A’s at NAPS and a total waste of time. Although if you got 1500 on the SAT while at NAPS but got straight C’s in the courses, that would show you are not applying yourself and you might get dropped (unless you were a star quarterback.)
Argue all you want, but if you want to play their game, you play by their rules. If a kid doesn’t want to take SAT prep I’m sure they aren’t going to hold a gun to his head, but decisions have consequences.

I don’t think you get what I am asking and perhaps you don’t understand how NAPS works (or maybe I don’t, but I am pretty sure one of us is clueless).

A candidate may be offered NAPS based on their entire application, including SAT’s. The purpose of NAPS is to prepare candidates academically to succeed as plebes at USNA. That preparation is done with a vigorous curriculum that includes: English, Calculus, Chemistry and Physics. Standardized tests like the SAT do nothing to prepare a candidate to succeed academically and therefore, there would be no reason to take the SAT again after entering NAPS. It would be a waste of time that would better spent at trying to master physics. Someone more knowledgeable correct me if I am wrong. Why the heck would you need to take the SAT again?
Thank you.

FWIW, we were all required to take the SAT while I was there, regardless of scores. (This was in the old test time when getting an answer wrong was a detriment to your score).

I personally went from an 1160 from high school to a 1320 while at NAPS. For me, it was a worthwhile endeavor.

Hey everyone! I know people will be hearing back from USNA soon about getting accepted to NAPS. I'm currently a prior enlisted student here, so if anyone has any questions, I'll do my best to answer!
Hope you don't expect Plebe Summer to be as easy as we went on you for Naps Indoc... (;

Thank you for confirmation. I was asking this question all along from a NAPS graduate Not That A NJ).

Please keep in mind, I wet to NAPS as c/o '92, so a lot may have changed in close to 30 years!

NAPS students are required to seek nominations from all of the normal sources and since many of the MOC committees will look at SATs, it stands to reason that retaking them would benefit the candidate. Of course, if they don't garner a nom from their MOC, they will be able to get in under the SECNAV nominations which are for Enlisted people.

May I ask what NAPS stand for? Naval Academy Preparatory School? If so, which prep school did you go to? Thanks.

NAPS (your guess is correct as to the acronym meaning) is its own school located in Newport, RI. When I went, it was in the building right next to OCS (Officer Candidate School).

If you are already in NAPs why would you have to take the SAT again? If you ace the curriculum at NAPS, isn’t that enough?
This year at least NAPS picked some select people to do the SAT, but most people don't have to retake it here at NAPS. It seems like it was mostly for those people who may have scored lower than others here. Also maybe to help with getting a nomination.

DD accepted into NAPS 2022.
Question; Do candidates normally, (pre-COVID), get to attend the Army-Navy game? This upcoming year it is in N.J., would it be feasible that they would go?
Our class obviously was not able to go this year, but it sounds like most years Napsters attend the armynavy game. Not sure how far they are willing to bus the battalion for it though🤷‍♂️

What classes/courses are you taking daily (past-present-future)? Thanks. Is there SAT practice sessions (weekends/weekdays)?
Everyone takes Math, English, Chemistry, and Physics. Everyone is placed in foundation, intermediate, or advanced classes for the subjects except English depending on how they first test into it.

What qualities make a candidate favorable for NAPS? are college reapplicants usually considered?

For your nomination, where did you get your letters of recommendation from. Nominations deadlines are usually due in October/November, so, how is it possible for teachers at the NAPS to write a LOR for you when they barely know you because you have only been there for 3 months. Also, is the chance of getting a nomination as a cadet candidate basically 99.99%?
I asked my teachers to write them and they did! Even though you've only been there a short while, they really get to know you through your grades and your work ethic, as well as from seeing you every day in classes.
Are the students attending NAPS mostly recruited athletes? Or are academics, fitness, etc. equally weighted for who is chosen to attend?
There's a good mix. A lot of athletes, but there are also a lot of people who are not.
What subjects/courses are you taking on a daily basis (past/present/future)?
Is there a SAT preparation sessions (weekends or weekdays)?
Math, English, Physics, and Chem are the four classes that we take on the daily.
There's an ACT prep for those who need it

This is correct.

That I'm not so sure of. I graduated high school a few years ago so I think I got selected because of my grades. A lot of people are here for a lot of different reasons, so it's difficult to put one blanket statement on what makes someone favorable.
My mom says that a lot of NAPSters are people that they really want to go to USNA, but who also need to work on a few things first.

I graduated high school in 2019 and have heard similar things about NAPS thank you for the insight!!

Has any present or previous Napster received a NAPs appointment this late in the game? ( I am getting nervous 😬....)
Thank you, by the way, this thread is very helpful.

Hello,

I received my appointment for NAPS class of 2022. I am enlisted and can’t wait to start this journey. However, I do wonder if there certain things you’d recommend doing before I get there to be better prepared. Thank you!
