Current Napster (C/O ‘23), AMA!

I’ve been here at NAPS for about two months now, so ask me any questions you may have about the program. Happy to answer anything!
My DD would like to do a year at NAPS if the Academy offers. She feels it would give her a year of learning the ropes and she would be better prepared for Calculus and Chemistry which seem to give Plebes the most heartburn. How much ProKnow is taught? I see Napsters holding a red book instead of Reef Points. Is it the same or an abridged version of RP? Is it true one must sign up for Navy Reserve prior to attending NAPS? If so, how was that handled? Also, we know you must apply for a MOC nomination but do you have to resubmit the USNA application? Finally, when do Napsters learn of their appointment to the Academy and what is the minimum GPA from NAPS to qualify?

My DS has completed the USNA app but has yet to receive a Nomination...he did receive two nominations for West Point. However, he wants to go to NAPS and then USNA. Is he eligible for NAPS? We live 15 minutes from NAVSTA Newport.

USNA evaluates all candidates for prep opportunities during the application process. Usually, if a candidate is found not to be academically qualified or would benefit from prep, but USNA likes everything else and wants to see the candidate at USNA, but just not this coming year, that is the general scenario for a NAPS or Foundation Scholar offer. They can use the prep route very flexibly, though. No way to know or predict.

Nomination is not required.
Admissions board selects the candidates that will go to NAPS. Only 250 people go there.

I would say you have pretty good chances
So far I think NAPS would be my best bet as a way to get into USNA. I participate in 3 varsity sports, different intramurals, girls state, sea cadet with high leadership, and a bunch of other things that would help me look good. However I won't lie, my high school grades aren't that great overall in math at all. I'm actually repeating a course that was originally advanced because I failed it. Do you think with a >1250 SAT score I would still have a chance at NAPS or even the academy? Academics so far would be my biggest problem getting in.

Hi, I got appointed to NAPS through the Coast Guard Academy, and was wondering what classes you are currently taking at NAPS! I also wanted to ask if it really feels like a family there? I hear all these things but wanna hear it from somebody who is experiencing it!

NAPS takes Math, English, Chemistry, and physics. The difficulty level is based on a placement test you take during Indoc. The family culture depends on your individual platoon culture. The way someone put it is we may not always like each other, but we love each other and will help one another out.

With your extracurriculars, you have a good chance of getting into either NAPS or the academy. I myself didn’t have strong standardized testing scores, so I got into NAPS first. And in high school, I wasn’t too great at math either. We have very similar backgrounds. As long as you keep working hard and participating in as many extracurriculars as you can, you have some great chances of getting in.

How was attrition? Am sure the vast majority finished, but was “quitting” a noticeable occurrence?

I am always interested in deckplate (right there) observations.

Typical class size at NAPS is roughly 240. I have never known whether that includes the small number of USCGA prepsters who attend.

Class of 2026 profile shows 195 came out of NAPS. I am sure, just like USNA, they have decades of data on voluntary and involuntary attrition. Medical, academic, conduct, military performance, etc., for involuntary. Voluntary - it’s hard, and some realize their dream of USNA is something they no longer desire. For prior enlisted with actual Fleet or Corps assignments in their past (not just initial schoolhouse), who rented apartments, had cars, lived with SOs, drank as they wished, lived a normal young adult service person life, NAPS is a sprinkling of cold water, with a big tub of icy water awaiting plebe year, where it’s no cars, no drinking even if 21 and you’ve got people a few years younger than you with no Fleet or Corps experience yelling at you. Some say “nah, not worth it, give me orders to finish out my enlistment somewhere.”

Do you get to know your group/platoon for the summer training before you get there? When do you get your timeslot?

I just saw your post, hopefully not too late. You don't get your company info until you report. Napsters can give to their parents after oath ceremony, if parents are not there ask for a phone and call home to give the info to parents. Our letters took over 10 days to get to our Napster. You will get your timeslot within a week of reporting, if you have not received you should be getting the email soon.

So you must be about halfway thru plebe year now. How’s it going?

Hey! It’s been pretty great so far, but I will say that the classes are challenging as far as staying on top of homework. Material isn’t too hard, but I do find myself swamped with busy work from each class at night. Love the faculty and military staff. They are super helpful and they always look out for the candidates here.

I’m a recruited athlete, but NAPS doesn’t have my sport, so I’ll have to wait until I get to the academy.
What sport will you play? Best of luck!!!!!
