Hey everyone, I am currently a NAPSter (applied for class of 2022, am now Navy CO 2023) and I got appointed here around this time last year. I remember being thouroughly confused about NAPS and I did not figure out anything until actually going through it. I would have loved to have known a current NAPSter with fresh information to have answered all of my questions, so that’s what I’m opening this up for. Ask anything!
Edit: also can answer recruited athlete questions

Hello, I am actually trying to get into NAPS this year. I have finished my application and now I'm waiting for a callback or something. Whenever you finished your application what did you do to better your chances in getting to NAPS? Thanks for the help!

So what is the life at NAPS like? I know everything about the Academy but there’s not a lot of info on NAPS
This question is pretty broad because life here is honestly crazy! You stay busy and throughout the year certain things become more lenient or change depending on the commanding officer, but after indoc there is mainly just heavy emphasis on school and studying. Day to day our schedule is
6 AM wake up, march to breakfast
6:30-7 clean
7:35 first class, 8:55 second class, 10:05-10:40 study period, 11 lunch, 12 third class, 1:20 fourth class, 2:35-3:30 study period, 3:30-5:30 sports period, 7-9:45 study period, 9:45-10:15 personal time 10:15 lights out.
So thats day to day but fridays are half days, and some days you have free periods, and also we have some weekends designated for military instruction which means you either travel (so fun), have assemblies, drill practice, or battalion physical training. That basically sums it up!
Edit: also in terms of general living, you live in one dorm with the whole student body and do everything together. Everyone is similar in age unlike at the academy so we are all generally close. The school building is right next door for easy access to tutors which is mandatory anyway, and you will learn that marching to chow is sucky when the weather gets cold. But we all stick it out together haha

Hey! So I was told from the beginning I had a good chance of getting in direct or going to NAPS, so after finishing my application there was no way to know what my outcome would be. Don’t anticipate NAPS, there is nothing you can do to increase your likelihood of going there. Rather anticipate the Academy because in doing so you increase your chances of getting in there which furthermore will increase your chances of NAPS. Continue sending admissions email updates of new volunteer hours, job promotions, leadership positions, sports accomplishments, etc. I would also throw in there if I met with someone important and things like that so they could know me more personally. I knew I would probably get into NAPS but I would send emails to admissions twice a month anyway as though I was anticipating a direct appointment and this actually made my name familiar with the board to help my overall case. Do not leave your application stagnant, ever!

Great description and current, so very helpful to those who will be offered NAPS here soon.

Marching to chow can be sucky - I laughed out loud. That’s exactly my memory from OCS in the 2Oth century, the delight of Narragansett Bay raw, damp, cold wind in the winter while marching outside while hungry. Hope you have some good cadences to make the time pass.

Hello navy2022VA,

I was just wondering what most are sent to NAPS for. Is it academic ? For the recruited athletes? Or is it for those without any noms but are good candidates? Or is it a mixture of all three?

Thanks!

I believe it's a mixture of all three. Nobody really knows exactly what they really want for NAPS.

All of the above & more. We have plenty of people that easily could’ve been directs but circumstances didn’t line up perfectly. Mostly focuses heavy on academics

Hey! I’m currently an active duty Corpsman and have been CPR since mid December.. I’ve been in contact with the fleet admissions Chief every so often and he let me know that I should be hearing back soon so fingers crossed. But anyway how are the priors currently regarded in your class? And do you know how long any of them waited until notified of their NAPS offer? Thank you!

Not sure their wait, but I know triple qualified priors have a pretty high chance of getting into NAPS compared to regular applicants. A lot of the priors here are in all advanced classes and blend in well with the student body but they also are kind of a clique (not in a bad way- they got here before directs and had completely different routines so it makes sense). They are super super helpful too so if you PM me I can point you in the direction of one of them.

Note to all...you don't apply or "try to get into NAPS. " Candidates are offered an opportunity to go to NAPS or Foundation programs if the Admissions Board determines they are promising candidates but would be better off served by an additional year of preparation. Academics is the probably the most common reason, but there could be others. As noted above, there are also athletes and prior enlisted at NAPS (prior enlisted is really the original purpose of the program), but again that is consistent with the basic premise that NAPS provides an additional year of preparation to increase opportunity for success at NAPS.

For OP -- where do they have the NAPSters billeted now ? I recently saw a Classmate post on Facebook that the old Nimitz Hall (the NAPS version, not USNA library) had been demo'ed ?

I am also active duty. I’m also hoping to hear back soon. The waiting is worse then advancement results. Especially when your chain keeps asking you everyday if you heard back from usna.

Hey MAUsna I just got the email this morning saying I got in to NAPS. Hopefully you hear back soon as well!!
Congratulations!!! Hopefully I do get a answer soon. Did your chain of command tell you first?
