Current plebe- feel free to ask for Beast advice or school year

Just about, depends on your running speed. If you’re really fast you’ll run with a faster running group and they’ll run more miles in 30 minutes than the slower group.

Gotcha, not much of a distance guy so thank you for the reassurance! How long are the usual rucks and what is the expected pace?

Rucks greatly range, we do “movements” which are like 4 miles or less. And then the longest ruck we did was 14 miles. 13.9 to be exact lol. And it’s a nice pace I’d guess around 20 minutes a mile. And you get to rest during the 9 mile ruck and march back. I wouldn’t worry tho because I sucked at rucking and still survived. Just gotta tell yourself to keep moving no matter what. The part that makes them suck is the hills but if you’re used to hills then it won’t be a problem for you.

Do you recommend trying to run with the fastest group you are able to if running is a strong suit of yours?
Yes, run with the group that challenges you but doesn’t over exert you. At the end of the day your run group doesn’t matter unless you have a personal goal you want to reach. Maybe try and move up 1 run group before the end of beast. Up to you tbh. After like a week you can run with whatever group you want. They won’t care

About when do you get to see which clubs and sports you may be interested in? And when would you get to start doing those activities?

Did you get the optional computer package (printer, monitor, etc.)? Would you recommend getting it or just purchasing what you need before the school year?

For sports you can try out during beast. About the 2nd week of beast they have a fitness type hour. And if you want you can try out for sports teams. And for clubs in September they had club night and every single club is there and you can walk around and get their info/join

Definitely get the optional computer package like fr fr get it. It comes from your cadet account so it’s money that never effects you. Your cadet account is a separate account that West Point runs and you never see that money until you graduate. I have it and glad I did. I have my own printer and monitor. It comes with portable charger, and a ton of other stuff.

Reference running at West Point.
1. The two mile run is more of a sprint. To train for this do long sprints, 220, 440, and 880.
2. As pointed out you will do longer runs for PT, so try to get up to 3-5 miles.
3. West Point is built in a fjord, so there isn’t much flat terrain. Thayer/Washington/Lee Raod is the one “flat” stretch. Practice running/hiking some hills if they are available.

What is a typical day like during BEAST
You wake up around 04:45 ish. go to pt at like 5:30 or something, come back, shower, go to breakfast at about 07:00. Breakfast is 10 minutes max. do knowledge, go pick up issued gear, do knowledge, eat lunch, do knowledge, go to a brief, go get more gear, do knowledge, go to dinner, do some quad thing, do knowledge. (There’s about a 2 hour period during the day for trying out for sports or you go to a fitness class/lesson. You’ll practice like ACFT stuff or learn combatives. ) usually in bed between 10-11 pm. that’s a typical garrison day. Field days are way different. You get to sleep in longer and go to bed earlier. And they’re typically really fun and no boring briefs.

When do tryouts for sports start, and are they all during BEAST?

There will be times to try out during the school year but if you’re interested in something it’s best to show your face during beast and start making those relationships. I know club team tryouts vary depending on what club. During club night you’ll find out when each club is holding their tryouts.

So like if you want to try to walk on/tryout for a NCAA team, are you able to practice with them during BEAST

In the "Instructions for applicants offered admission" packet that we received, it states "On R-Day, all Cadet Candidates are expected to meet the minimal physical requirements: MEN • 6 pullups • 46 pushups • 60 situps • Run 2 miles in < 15 minutes WOMEN • 2 pullups • 22 pushups • 60 situps • Run 2 miles in < 17 minutes." If one does not meet these standards on R-Day are they immediately sent home? Thank you for doing this and sharing your insight!

No lol. There were people who couldn’t do 2 miles in 22 minutes during the ACFT. By the end of beast everyone will be where they need to be physically. You don’t get kicked out of Beast. You’d have to do something like illegal for them to boot someone. However definitely continue to workout and try your best to be as fit as you can!

As beast gets closer lmk if y’all have questions! I remember being very stressed.
Thanks for doin this! I have a few questions:

1) SPECIFICALLY, how many pairs of underwear / dress socks / boot socks should I bring?
2) What kind of watch should I get for CBT?
3) Should I bring a shoeshine kit?
4) Do you recommend wearing liners underneath socks for boots/low-quarters? If so, where do you get them (I've seen this advised on other threads)?
5) Do you recommend Medicated powder or other foot-treatments for blisters? If so, what?

Thanks again!

When in the school year can you try out for the skydiving team?
