Current Preppies answer your questions! USAFA Prep

Two quick questions:
1. Is lacrosse an option for sport at USAFAPS?
2. As my DS is already a certified pilot, will there be any opportunity to fly while he is there?
1. The few LAX players had practices early in the year, but now they just stay fit and practice with themselves.
2. He can join the aero club down at the airfield. There is a program at the prep for people to get their private pilot's license, but if your DS already has his, I don't think he can do that program.

That's great info. Thanks very much.

Since your DS has a PPL he won’t be able to participate in early path to wings, but I could imagine that if he talked to whoever is in charge of the program he would be able to go fly here and there. In addition he can increase his hours by using the simulation flight system we have on campus.

Thanks again!

One more question: Do you recommend getting boots in advance? We seem to get a lot of mixed information on this.
You can get boots if you really want to break them in early, but tons of people showed up this year without buying boots in advance. (You just get issued them).

I highly suggest getting boots prior…it allows you to have boots that are already broken in. Of course you don’t have to but if you have the means to I would. It is common for people to get blisters by working in the boots that are issued, and considering you will be wearing them most of them time…Ouch! On another note, then you have 2 pairs of boots

Yes! Your portal will be updated letting you know. For both nominations and appointment you should get a document in the mail.
Hello, when will I get the document in the email. I haven't received anything yet; instructions, etc. The only thin I have is the offer letter in the portal.

My DS just rec'd an offer for USAFA PREP - our heads are spinning, after hearing/seeing no updates in the portal through Feb-March-April. He's got about 5 days to accept/decline. It strikes me as the most incredible opportunity to fine-tune aspects of his profile and experience something very unique for 10 months while he prepares for reapplication to USAFA.

He plays soccer and was actively working his plan 'B' and committed to a state school.

1. Is there a soccer option at the prep school?
2. Does the Prep school run for 10 months with no 'breaks' or leave?
3. Does Prep cover DS travel to/from CO Springs?

I've read through most of the FAQ's that I could find, but I may have missed some of those.

Last question - would you choose YES to attend USAFA Prep if you had to do it over again?

Thanks!

Good afternoon. Congratulations. Please reach out to me directly and and can answer your questions, specifically with regard to the soccer.

This may seem like a silly question. But what was it like transitioning from civilian life to military life? was it hard to adapt? do you have any advice and things I should know?

1. Yes there is a soccer option!!!
2. We have breaks for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Spring break! So you will be able to see your son :)
3. Yes, they do. If you choose to take your son then he can file for a reimbursement as well.
4. I would definitely say yes if I had the chance. I’ve met amazing people here and it’s just. Great experience overall. If your son decides not to go through after the 10 months then he doesn’t have to! And the best part he also will get 33% of his GI bill! I say take it, it won’t be something you regret even if it’s not for you. You gain a lot of knowledge being here and create a lot of connections.

If you have any other questions or concerns please reach out to me directly!!!

Not a silly question at all! Basic training is meant to be that transition period from being a civilian to a member of the military. Everything you need to know you will learn. I don’t think it was very hard to adapt because I’m already a very disciplined individual. I say study everything about the Air Force. The ranks and history would definitely help.

what model of boots? I assume if you have the same boots as what are issued, you can use them at NAPS, correct?
