At a regular college with ROTC, you are able to have a more traditional college experience while also undertaking military training. Here at MMI, you always have to be in uniform, MWF there is drive out leave and T TH is walk out leave. MMI also has a smaller number of students than another college would have. There are around 300 kids here which breaks down into about 100 per program. MMI does have an Army ROTC and Air force ROTC program. The USAF ROTC takes place off campus but I believe transportation is provided. Lmk if you have any more questions!

Is ROTC (specifically AFROTC if it matters) part of the "Service Academy Program?" The Marion web site makes it seem as if they are different things, which led me to wonder whether students in the SAP (whether sponsored or self-prep) are encouraged to/required to also participate in one of the ROTC programs.

As a self-prep cadet, what kind of individualized support/counseling towards SA admissions do you get from the institute, as opposed to if you were there for an Associate's Degree?
Also, as you are self-prep, this means you are paying tuition on your own, correct (not a part of CGAS)?
Is it common for self-prepers to be prepping for multiple SA applications?
Finally, what is the breakdown of the program? Mostly CGA and AFA? A mix of all 5 SAs? How many are there for USNA?
Thanks!

We have a school official designated to our program that guides us through the process and I highly recommend you reach out to him! LTC Bowen is his name and you can find his contact info on MMI's website. If you were just at MMI for an associates degree, you could still apply to the academies and not be apart of the program and probably still get guidance from LTC Bowen if you had any questions. There is also two different ROTC programs at MMI (Army is directly with the school and air force has a program with the University of Alabama). The one thing you would miss out on if you weren't in the SAP program is the occasional visits from officials from the academies. Those are very beneficial so they can connect a name to a face.

Yes I am a self prep so I pay my own tuition but I did get academic scholarships from the school.

It is extremely common for self preps to be applying to multiple academies, and most do! I am just only interested in USCGA.

It is a pretty good mix of USAFA, USNA, West Point, and Coast Guard. There aren't any sponsored merchant marine cadets currently but there are a couple self preps applying. Most SAP cadets currently are sponsored I believe. There are only five self prep coasties currently that I know of (others might have applied and I don't know but I am pretty sure it is just us five). To get a more specific breakdown you would have to contact LTC Bowen.

I hope this helped! LMK if you have any other questions!

Do kids that are prepping for the SAs also participate in ROTC? Are they required to? That's what I'm trying to understand.

No. In MMI SAP you are SAP, not in any other curriculum programs. You are required to take Military Science through the Army ROTC department but you are not a member of Army ROTC. AFROTC is whole separate program. It is also not on campus. MMI is a subsidiary of the U-Alabama AFROTC wing. They bus cadets an hour north to Tuscaloosa on Thursdays for AFROTC training.

Okay, so all SAP must take Military Science through Army ROTC and go to Tuscaloosa on Thursday for AFROTC? Just trying to understand the requirement.

If you choose to do AFROTC instead of being in the SAP program you would travel to Tuscaloosa.

All students are required to take military science classes and those credits are can transfer to other ROTC schools. MMI has an ECP Army ROTC program.

You cannot be in both, you have to do one or the other.

They are two different things and you would have to choose one or the other if you were interested in both. You do have to take a military science class but you are not in ROTC as a SAP cadet.

Thank you. That answers the question. I appreciate it.

Do you know what the tuition is for the SAP?

The total cost is $22,288 for out of state and $16,288 for instate. Tuition for out of state is $12,000 and instate is $6,000. MMI offers a BUNCH of scholarships so you would be able to bring that down by a lot, especially if you are in the SAP program you should have all the academic requirements to achieve the merit based scholarships. If you want to look at the breakdown of cost here is the link: Link to tuition and fees There is also a uniform fee and a room and board fee (it is required to live on campus).

Hi - my son is considering the SAP program. How many roommates do cadets in the SAP program have and how are they determined? Also, what are SAP cadets allowed to have in their rooms? For instance, my son plays piano and I was wondering if a standalone keyboard would be allowed or if there is a music room with piano available on campus. Thank you.

Hi!! Every incoming cadet will have one roommate. Their are cases when C-1s have their own room but it is normally after ITC when that happens. You can move companies or request a new room in your current company using a form online. I am in Echo Company and everyone currently has their own room because we had the space. Depending on which barracks your son is in, their probably will not be enough room for a keyboard but fortunately there is a band room with multiple pianos! Normally SAP cadets are placed together and with the same academy focus for the most part. If you know someone else coming to the school and want to be roommates with them, you can contact Colonel Bowen and ask if it would be possible for y'all to be roommates. That is what I did and I was able to be roommates with her! There are some restrictions of monitor sizes and things like that in rooms which can be found on the cadet manual (Cadet Manual Link ). Leadership in companies are allowed to have other things like mini fridges that incoming C-1s cannot have and won't be able to have unless they are in the company's leadership. Let me know if you have any more questions!!

Do you know, approximately, what is the total number of SA sponsored cadets versus self-prep cadets in this year's SAP program? Thanks.
