Current Self Prep at Marion Military Institute- ask any questions!

Sadly, I found out last night that I did not receive an appointment but thank you for the kind words!
So sorry to hear that you were not offered an appointment. What if any advice did Col Bowen give you after receiving the dreaded TWE. Also what are your plan B thoughts, if you are ready to share?

I am going to be at MMI again next year and reapply to the academy and CSPI. If neither of those work out I will transfer to FAU (most likely bc it’s a cspi school and I’m from Florida) and then reapply for cspi again and then if I don’t get it again then I’ll finish my bachelors and apply for OCS. I’ve mostly talked to Captain Gatlin (he’s a retired uscg captain and he teaches math at MMI) about it and he told me more about cspi and ocs. He’s the academic advisor for all Cgas and self sponsored coasties so he helped me create my schedule for next semester to work towards my associates degree.

I can’t wait to meet all the new SAP cadets, especially the self sponsored coasties so I can help support them and encourage them throughout the year!
My DS will be self prep at MMI and playing tennis. Have you seen any start dates yet? Do you know if athletes come in early? Trying yo figure out summer plans. Heard a lot of good things about MMI

I don’t know our reporting-in days yet but I would plan for first week of August, around the 6th-10th most likely. I know that the cross country team came early but I don’t think tennis did. I can ask one of my friends on the tennis team and get back to you! I will also try to find the dates for reporting in for new cadets.

That is, in my opinion, a super solid plan! And a testament to the many people looking here for direction. MMI is definitely great at providing kids like you excellent opportunities, if your willing to work for them.
My Son ended up with the "trifecta". 3rd year applying to Service Academies. 3 Appointments. USMA, USAFA and USCGA!
I obviously can't say he would have failed in this end result, if he'd have gone to State U, done ROTC, and pursued SA appointments again from there. But, I honestly feel like MMI really made it much easier for him to fully showcase his incredible hard work to the gatekeepers involved. There's no doubt in my mind, you're at the right place.
MMI did everything they said they would for my son, and so much MORE. We're from a very competitive N. TX congressional district, so you sure can't argue with the results.
Third time is the charm!!!
You're gonna realize your USCGA dreams, I just know it!!! And you will undoubtedly have great success in that endeavor. Enjoy your journey!

So I asked my friend who plays tennis here and he said that they did not have to report early.

Do you have a feel yet for how self-prep SAP students at MMI are doing this year with appointments? I know you are planning on another year at MMI, and another poster here has had great success in his second prep year (although first at MMI), but I think that's all I know of.

Im another self prep at Marion this year. I got my USNA Appointment. The numbers for MMI are pretty impressive. Definitely the best self-prep results out of its competitors. I can't give you a sure statistic but we should be around 75-80% appointments for self preps this year. If you want me to I could throw together a spreadsheet and give you hard data.

Congratulations on your appointment at USNA!
How many years were you at MMI in the SAP program?

Congrats to you! We are leaning pretty heavily towards MMI if DS doesn't get into Annapolis the first time.

That would be awesome if you could.

This is a touchy subject to me each year as I see it next to impossible to take the raw data and make a determination on how effective the Self-Prep program is in helping a candidate get accepted the next year as most of the information is antidotal. I see the biggest advantage for an applicant that is not mature enough to be successful away from home the first year and who also does not have a solid educational background and lower test scores. The rigor of these schools can help fix those things and make them more competitive. BUT if you have a applicant that has the maturity and the educational background to be successful their first year away, the college experience may be a better option. I would venture to guess that we have at least as many college reapplicants get accepted as we do self prep applicants and probably more. Even though I was accepted out of high school many moons ago, I lacked that maturity and educational background. A year at a program like MMI would have been a great benefit preparing me for USMA. Contrast this to my daughter who did not get in her first year just due to a principal nominee and the lower numbers of offers that year MMI would have hurt her chances. She went to a DIV I school, pulled a 3.5 in her first year as a pre-med major, was a member of the track team, and did well in ROTC. The bottom line comes down to an honest evaluation with input from admissions on where you missed the mark and you have to develop an individual plan to address those shortcomings. For the sake of argument, lets say 150 individuals were accepted of the NWL. Qualified applicant 151 probably needs a much different plan than qualified applicant 300. One size does not fit all.

It's one piece of information among others. I agree that it's not dispositive, but IMO more information is better than less. (In fact, that's one reason why I think "test optional" is a stupid concept for college admissions. How in the world is giving a school less info about an applicant objectively beneficial to anybody?) Candidly, it gives me a warm fuzzy when a school says "here are our numbers, for better or worse" vice "hummana hummana hummana." My request to them is, Don't treat me like an idiot. Give me the info, and let me figure out what to do with it. (And would that our Govt might have done that in another circumstance 2-3 years ago . . . but I digress.)

There are still a few rolling in, so I won't be able to give you accurate results until the end of the semester. I will guess it is around 70-75% because some of the people who started in the SAP program have either switched to AFROTC or the ECP program here. I do know that some kids did lose themselves in the fall semester and that hurt them so they won't earn an appointment. My best advice is that if you come here determined to improve and to get into an academy, you will get into one. And yes, it sounds funky coming from someone who didn't get an appointment but I only applied to one academy and I did improve all around so there is truth to my statement. I was definitely a more competitive candidate because I went to MMI and tackled the barriers standing in my way. There have been several self preps who have gotten into the academies that they wanted to because they worked hard towards that goal.

Fingers crossed your DS gets into USNA!! But do know that MMI is a great back up! I think all but a couple self prep navy cadets have gotten their appointments.

Hey! I am a current self prep for USCGA at MMI. If you have any questions on what school is like ask away!
Two more questions:

1) Are cadets allowed to have a car?

2) Can you describe the SAT prep program?

1) Yes cadets can have a car!! There will be a registration fee i think and some sort of sticker you will have to put on your car. There is more info about it on the website.

2) It meets on weekends during the first semester and is taught by someone from outside the school. You will take a couple practice exams and then you can ask questions about the ones you missed.
