Current USAFA Prep student

Ah, the good ol' days.

It's not to bad. If you do your best here and work hard you have nothing to worry about. We find out so late because they want to see our 4th quarter grades.

We just got the list of things to bring and we saw khakis, brown leather belt and shoes. I was wondering what kind of shoes for the girls or even what kind of belt. What are they used for? I assumed that they would be issued everything they needed.

These are for "husky gear" which is an outfit worn by cadet candidates at the prep school on a few different occasions. There aren't really any strict guidelines for exactly what kind of shoes or belt or shade of khaki pants. Just go with your best judgement. You will be issued a shirt and coat with USAFA Prep logos.

We wore husky gear to a couple of the football games and a few social events. Heels would probably not be a good choice for the girls.

We find out in may. We are the last ones to find out.

When will all the candidates offered Prep find out? I know some have posted they have already been offered a slot, but that was early in the process.

They can find out pretty late. Prep school offers can potentially be offered all the way up until a couple days before basic training.

We have several sports here. They play at a junior college level, so it is easier to try and walk on to the team. We also have several volunteer opportunities and leadership positions throughout the squad. Your days are really structured so their really isn't much time for anything besides what is structured in. Your weekends though are you main time to get out with your friends and explore colorado. There are several hiking trails on base. There is also an outdoor Rec center where you can rent snowboards and skis if you wanted to go to the mountains for the weekend.

Usually the sports the have recruits in so mens and women's basketballs, volleyball and football and soccer. There are a few tennis, swimming, and lacrosse recruits who just play together.

Hi! Thanks for starting this thread! I noticed on the paperwork that there is a link to purchase season tickets to the football games... I am assuming that attendance is not mandatory for Prep students as it is for Cadets? I am planning on purchasing them, but just wanted to check first. Also, do any of the Preppies have Sponsor families? We have one that was going to sponsor her as a Cadet and they are finding out the process for a Preppie, but I was just curious.

Thanks again for the insight!

Congratulations on the decision to come to AF Prep! During Basic Training your preppy with be required to purchase season tickets for the football games. All home games are mandatory. They cost about $160-70. The games are a ton of fun. For sponsor families, only some preppies have them. They assign them to the cadets first and then the preppies. So, most likely if you already have one lined up you should be fine.

Thank you, we are all very excited! Thanks for the clarification on the football tickets, the intro letter didn't really specify so I wanted to make sure. And I am glad to hear about the sponsor families! Now... what things do you wish someone had told you before you went AND what's the best advice for parents? =) (you didn't know the questions would get harder, did you? ;))

For parents: subscribe to a WebGuy account! They do a great job of photographing what is going and it will let you see what your preppy is doing everyday. They also have a blog feature that gives a lot of information. It will be great to have basic and academic year photos. Also, write your preppy as often as you can. We don't always get to check mail everyday, but there is nothing better than having mail waiting for you. Know your preppy may not respond right away. I wrote letters back after Lights out during basic, but it's really Whenever you get time. Just let your preppy know what's going on and keep them attached to life at home and current events.

For preppies: basic will be long and hard. You will think about quitting, it's natural. But don't! Life after basic is 100 times better. Basic is annoying and a pain. Lots of long nights and early morning. The worst part will be not knowing what time it is because they take all the clocks away. Just take it meal to meal and day to day. As long as you give it all you have all the time you will be 100% fine. Your cadre want to see effort. Remember it's not about you it's about the team. This is 2 1/2 weeks of 5 years. When you get to the Academy it will be 6 weeks of of your 5 years. In general with your prep school career, just try your best and go get help from your teachers as much as possible. It's a long 10 months but you will have a ton of fun and make so many life long friends. While your here keep the bigger picture in mind. People will get kicked out for doing stupid stuff. Don't let that be you.

Hey.. Wondering about the average prior enlisted cadet you've came across at prep school. I'm almost done with my package for(hopeful) summer 2016 entry, and am currently looking at act scores of 26 English, 27 reading, 24 science and 22 math. (Yes, i suck at math) gpa of 3.58 with 2.5 yrs in so far. Does this stack up? I'm pretty confident about my extra curriculars and things I've done so far in the af, but am kind of nervous about academic numbers.. Definitely my limiting factor. Others feel free to weigh in also. Any feedback appreciated

Your math ACT is low, as you know. Take the ACT again, and take the SAT. Get a prep book and work the problems. People sometimes do significantly better on one or the other, and 2) USAFA superscores - that is, they take your highest sub-scores, even from multiple test events.

Also, not to flail a dead horse: even if you major in a humanity (history, English, etc.) you will take a lot of math. You might consider taking a math course through CCAF - pre-calculus or, if you're qualified, even calc 1. Demonstrating you can succeed at the kind of coursework you'll be expected to succeed in at USAFA will be an additional piece of persuasive evidence.
