CVW or prom

I know this is a common sense type of question, but I have another conflict in the way of this.
If you've seen my last posts, my grandma is not a big fan of me being in the military. Neither is my mom. Both of them want me to be a nurse or some type in the medical field.

I have a CVW coming up Apr. 20-22, and junior prom is Apr. 21. I obviously want to go to the CVW, but my grandma doesn't know about it yet. I feel like if I tell her about this then we'd have a heated argument again and she'll give me the silent treatment. She'll most likely make me go to prom instead.
Any thoughts? Time is running out because I have to sign and submit the papers for the CVW and prom tix are sold only till this Wed. Thanks!

The CVW doesn't add anything to your package but it does give you a good glimpse of life at USNA.

If you would rather go to the CVW than the junior prom, you should follow your instincts. You will have senior prom next year. In fact prom used to be only for seniors, it's just evolved into including juniors (and at some schools all classes).

As for your grandma and your mom - stay true to yourself and follow your heart.

You said this is your junior prom, which means you have another year of high school and a lot of other options for attending a CVW. You could try to reschedule your CVW for this spring, but that may not be possible, since classes end May 2. So consider asking USNA if you can move your CVW to next fall when you're a high school senior -- and possibly enjoy the added benefit of a home football game.

Did you make a decision? You could call admissions and ask to switch to the CVW for 30 March - 1 April. Having read about your situation, I'd still recommend asking your parents to attend the briefs, Q&A and tours on Friday. They could be coming home totally impressed and sold! Best of luck!

That's something you will have to decide . Sounds like your a little on the fence about the whole military thing . Its up to you .
As for my son the Academy was number 1 priority . He wanted it since 6th grade

You decide, but my opinion is don't go to junior prom!!!! It'll take away some of the "specialness" from your Senior prom!

My DS chose prom this year over all else. Of course his prom is in the grand ball room of the HMS Queen Mary...

Go with your gut. If there is something memorable to what prom might be for you, consider it!

Well.... You can take all the cash you will drop on the prom and save it to invest. Go to CVW you have a Sr. Prom. Being respectful to Grandmar it's your college journey live it to your life. Grandmother might be upset for a little while but she loves you so you should be fine. Good luck with your decision.

Just another perspective, but is junior prom your main prom? I know at my school anyone is allowed to attend prom, but it is the JUNIOR prom. They decorate the gym and learn the formal dance for promenade (I know, my school is old fashioned). I know most schools have senior prom as the main event, but not all schools are the same. So, if it's not your main prom, I would recommend CVW, but if it's the big one for you, I would recommend rescheduling the CVW unless you really don't want to go to prom.

Unless you do something you'll regret, you'll forget your junior prom much sooner than you think.

There is more than one date for CVW. I went to CVW in the fall. Check the USNA website for more available dates. Proms are always fun and definitely nights you'll remember.

You can call admissions and ask for a different CVW date. Go to prom and have fun.

Update: I'm not really leaning towards prom anymore because I feel like I won't enjoy it as much as the CVW. I already bought the dress though.
I just told my grandma about the CVW - she said I could experience it but still go into nursing after I graduate. Is there a day where parents/families can do an orientation or something? I'm currently in school and scared that later she'll give me one of those lectures and she'll get mad at me again and give me the silent treatment.

When you go for Candidate Visit Weekend, they will most likely sit you all down in an auditorium and give an admissions presentation with some speakers to begin the weekend. Families are welcomed to attend and stay for that to find out more and ask questions, etc. If you were to just visit the academy on a random day, there are presentations during the day that you can attend. Just ask the visitor center desk for times for the day or check the website. Your field officer that is assigned to you by the academy is always willing to answer questions from you or your family because that's what they signed up for.

Hope everything works out well!

CVW doesn't hurt to go. It can only help your application because when you go into interviews, they will highly likely ask you if you visited the Academy or did any programs at the Academy, so CVW is a great talking point. Plus while at CVW, you have resources where you have no where else as current cadets can help you first hand with questions and you can see their (and maybe your future) daily endeavors.

Regarding the CVW versus prom question, it sounds like you've already started to lean CVW, and you've gotten lots of advice from other posters. The best advice I heard was to try to do both. Your BGO should be able to help you change your CVW date. There is probably a candidate on the other side of this transaction looking to get into your assigned weekend.

On the broader context of your question, as a BGO and as the parent of a MIDN, I often sit across the table from parents (and grandparents) who have reservations about their sons and daughters attending the Academy and/or serving in the military. I try to listen, understand their concerns and then do my best to address them. I have put parents in touch with various officials from the Academy, including uniformed officers and current Midshipmen.

Regarding the question of your mother's and grandmother's unease with the prospect of your military service, I think you should first decide how important that is to you. I have some candidates who are resolute about their desire to serve, regardless of external factors and influence. They hope their parents are on board, but ultimately decide it isn't important in their decision-making. If, on the other hand, it is very important to you, I would suggest that you ask your BGO for help. I have personally spoken to parents about military service obligations, careers, the academic and social environment at the Academy, the Academy's stance on sexual harassment and the programs they have in place to prevent it, opportunities for leadership, the (excellent) perception that graduate schools and corporations have of service academy graduates -- the list is endless.

Some of these concerns can get quite personal, and are probably not appropriate for an open forum. If you want to PM, I'm happy to respond. I don't want to encroach on the domain of a fellow BGO, so I will defer to him or her, but I am happy to help if I am able.
