Keeping an eye on Annapolis weather (sunny & 80's here in So Cal!) and starting to pack...any parents on the forum want to share travel ideas for the weekend? We're flying in Wednesday and going to the parent program on Friday. Staying in the area until our Sunday night flight out of BWI, looking for ideas to fill our time while on the east coast.

Lots of great food and down town Annapolis is precious. Cute shops and shopping. Tours and parent events occupied way more of our time that I had expected. Just soak it all in. Maybe a sporting event?

I will be hosting a candidate for this CVW! Make sure your DS/DD comes prepared with lots of questions and enthusiasm! Hosting a candidate can be a hit or miss for us plebes when they don’t show interest. It is rare to have unlimited access to the Yard with a mid to yourself so take advantage of every opportunity.

Great to see USNAismyplace back after plebe summer!!!
So much to do local, and in the twin neighboring cities. Spend time on the Yard to visit Memorial Hall, and don't miss the museum which is phenomenal. Annapolis has fun eats...Cantlers, Steaks at Lewnes, homemade pop tarts at Iron Rooster, fried clams and beers at Galway Bay and so much more just in Annapolis. Previous threads review all the great food in Annapolis.
Baltimore and DC great travel destinations. No better museums on planet Earth than Smithsonian complex in DC, National Gallery in DC, National Arboretum in DC, aquarium in Baltimore. Explore both cities for great eats. My kids used to like the combo of museums in DC than eat in chinatown, or go to the inner harbor in Baltimore followed by a meal within walking distance of little Italy.
Great Falls Park in DC as fall colors are just starting.
Enjoy as this is an amazing season in the midatlantic.
Go Navy!!....Go Nats!!

If you are dropping off your child at USNA on Thursday early evening, I would highly recommend sticking around for the Opening presentation and Admissions Briefing - parents are encouraged to attend and it is very informative. I think it lasts about an hour or slightly more. Candidates are paired with their Mids immediately following the event and afterwards you can explore DTA for the rest of the evening.

I second (or 4th...) going to a football game. Getting IN THE STADIUM early enough to see march-on, see the flyover, parachute in, and hear the choirs sing the anthem. GOOSEBUMPS.

Noon meal formation. GOOSEBUMPS.

Also a church service in the chapel. GOOSEBUMPS.

Seeing MIDN gathered is spectacular. I get emotional every time.

Game starts at 3:30. March On of Brigade at 3. You want to bring the security line to get into Stadium by 2:30 at the latest.

Only reserved parking at Stadium. Take cash to park in nearby school lot or home driveways.

See:

Note - new this season - Stadium has gone to Clear Bag policy similar to NFL stadiums. Travel light, wear coat/jacket with convenient pockets.

> Last few times I have made it back for a game (usually Reunions), I have been lucky to get into the Stadium before half-time; enjoying Class tailgator too much. After awhile, the march on and flyover goosebumps go away, but staying for Navy Blue & Gold is a must.

This
I haven't seen a march on in many many years. Too much other stuff keeps me away.

Same for me, I seem to trail into the stadium at some point. I always make the “duty recommendation,” for those new to it all.

By any chance would that "other stuff" be the consumption of adult beverages during the tailgating portion of the activities? Inquiry minds want to know.

It’s still new to me. I suspect the goosebumps will wear off. Part of it is having my child in there somewhere. Hoping to have another join next year and I hope to maintain that emotional response for him, too. Not have a ‘been there, done that’ attitude. He has a lot of that already as the youngest of four [emoji23]

the noon formations and march ons will get old, but wait till your first squadron fly-in or ship homecoming after cruise, plenty of new opportunities for goose bumps in the future

Not really. Generally not more than one and often not even that. More often it is seeing and being with my brothers and sisters that I haven't seen in a long time. My class has major reunions in the "N Room" within the stadium and just table and group hopping takes a lot of time. In addition to company and team mates, I have lots of other folks who I know from cruises, adjacent companies, civilian job, time in the fleet, etc. Lots and lots of people to greet.

The above is so true - I’m Not A Grad, but a full career + BattO tour + continuing close ties yields former shipmates, long-time friends, people who worked for me or for whom I worked, former mids back for reunions, the extended sponsor alum family. I was an O-rep for one of the classes when I was a BattO and am always welcomed at their tailgater. DH, as a A Grad, intersects the same way, with the addition of classmates. There are many who don’t even have game tix, just enjoy the parking lot family.

I enjoy Navy football and always tried to make a couple of home games per season when DD was at USNA (plus Army/Navy). I'm not a Grad or even prior military, but always enjoyed the atmosphere. If you don't know anyone to catch up with for tailgating, there is always the Captains BBQ inside the stadium. It's decent food with beer/wine/soft drinks. I used this option a couple of times and always ended up having a nice conversation with someone. Unfortunately my schedule this year is not going to allow a home game or Army/Navy but I hope to get back into it next year.

My favorite parking spot for home games was the West Garret garage. It's just off the traffic circle where West St and Taylor Ave meet. Easy walk to the stadium. I found that I could walk back to the garage and was far enough from the traffic congestion that I could get out easily which more than made up for the short walk.
