My DD was accepted this summer in the 3 SA summer programs (SLE, AFSS and NASS), she did Army & AF and couldn't make it to Annapolis because she was in finals at her HS that week.
So after and amazing 2 weeks in this Academies, she still have the "bug" and curiosity for Navy to see first hand what they offer, and compare, because she will apply this month to all 3 SA & (ROTC's), so, did somebody out there send their kids to this "Candidate Visit Weekend"?, how was it?, she really want to do it, just get the invitation so we are thinking why not?, any words?

Hi wondermom. I think I can be a little help. CVW is by invitation from the Academy; it's not something that a candidate can apply to. If you DD received the invite then as a parent I would say if you can do it send her. Our DD attended this past Oct. she was happy she did it because it was right after the mids finished going through their summer "military readjustment". What helped my DD was her hearing about all the hard stuff the mids go through. She remained intrigued. Our DD also attended the STEM camp in 9th grade and a week at the crew camp so she managed to experience a lot. She applied to NASS but I told her more than likely she would not get it because of being selected to CVW and I can only assume STEM. Not the end all. So if envied send her.

My son was invited to a CVW in the fall of his junior year of high school. Prior to that, he was sold on USAFA. However, after the CVW, he was certain USNA and the Navy were right for him. He was not accepted the following summer to NASS, but went to USAFA SS. Even after that, he still wanted USNA. Now he's a youngster at USNA and couldn't be happier. The CVW was the pivotal experience for him. He felt it was better being with the mids during the actual school year versus SS where you don't get a feel for what the academy is really like. CVW also offers parents more opportunity to learn about USNA and the admissions process. So I'd highly recommend both your daughter and you take advantage of the CVW invitation.

Lots of older threads on this subject. CVW gives applicants a better inside view of what it is like to be a mid at USNA. The various summer seminar programs tend to be more advertisements to get some who might not otherwise consider an SA to become interested.

If you want to go and haven't been invited, request a CVW from your regional director. USNA is targeting juniors now more than seniors for this program but there are usually available spaces for CVWs so it's always worthwhile to ask.

She as the invitation :)

My son attended last September and he enjoyed it. It also helped him in the decision process of which academy he felt was right for him. We enjoyed it as parents, too.

IMO, if you can afford it, she should go. While different than SS or SLE, it will give her an idea of what the Naval Academy is all about. My DS went as a junior. In some ways, CVW may give her more insight than NASS. That was the case for my DS. And, if you can afford it, you should go with her. There are a couple of excellent briefings for parents and Annapolis, especially in the fall, is really nice. Good luck.

It won't be as flashy as the summer seminars are but it will give her a good look at the place and a good idea of the day to day atmosphere. It wont be an apples to apples comparison to the summer seminars at the other S.A.'s but still might help her in her big decision.

I'm curious...if we have any current or recent Midshipmen lurking out there, how are Midshipmen CVW hosts selected ? Are they volunteers or "voluntold", Plebes or 3/C ? , and what are the accomodations ? I don't recall having CVW's back in the day, or at least as widespread. I vaguely recall a handful, like NAPS visit, and givng the vistor a fold up Army cot, but I presume USNA is much more accomodating now ?

Mom of a youngster here. DS volunteered last year to host several CVWs as a plebe (no 3/C hosts). Attendees slept on a cot in his room at Bancroft. I believe there was some benefit to plebes who volunteered - carry-on maybe? Can't recall, but it was enough incentive for my son.
