Good afternoon everyone,

I am a second year applicant, and a current 4/C NROTC Midshipman. I have been presented an opportunity to go to a CVW, which I was not presented with last year. Is it typical for second year applicants to receive this opportunity and is it an experience worth going? Thank you for the time and help.

CVW is a great opportunity, I don't know if it's typical or not for reapplicants but it is more favorable than not for your application process if you are offered one.

My son just got a CVW inquiry also...he had gone to summer seminar so I wonder (other than being actually in school vs. camp) the vast benefits of attending

I was a 2x CVW recipient, once as a senior and once as an appointee as a MIDN 4/C in SSMP. I'd say that the CVW is worth going to. I detailed NASS and it is a great program. However, what you see at USNA is decided by Admissions. NASS is for recruiting. CVWs on the other hand exist so people can take a hard look if they want to be a MIDN. Outside of restrictions for liability reasons (e.g. PT), you see a pretty unfiltered picture of MIDN life. You see what it's like to not get an incredible amount of sleep, go to workouts at 0530, go to class all day, and do whatever ECAs your host has. You also get to see what like in Bancroft is truly like. You'll see how Plebe Year actually works, what the upperclass interactions are like, and what people do for fun when they don't have much to do, but are required to stay on the Yard (mids are creative).

Even though a CVW is shorter than NASS, it provides a more accurate picture of what like at USNA is like. NASS shows you a lot of the cool stuff at USNA, but you don't see a lot of the downsides.

DS planned to go the route of civilian college with NROTC scholarship until he attended CVW. Talking to mids, going to classes, etc. moved USNA to his first choice late in the process. NASS was virtual, so CVW was valuable in his discernment...and now I have a Plebe.

A successful outreach!! And some who attends, realizes it’s not for them, is also a successful outreach.

This is a great example of what these weekend are designed to accomplish. Help you decide if it’s ‘for you’, or not. Go if you are undecided or need further clarification your mind. Neither of mine needed a CVW for their decision.

NOT going will have no affect on your application.

Try to think of the “no CVW offer last year” and “the CVW offer this year” as pure chance … a simple roll of the dice … don’t waste time reading too much into it.

You know what you wanted last year and what you want this year … and all this plays into your Long Term goals.

Use this Short term CVW opportunity to help you gauge your long term goals ….

Play this short term opportunity very “Mechanically” …

DS did not receive a CVW until Spring 2022, well after he received his nom and appointment. The recruiter and BGO likely encouraged someone to find a slot for him to attend CVW since he was very open about the civilian college/NROTC options under consideration too.

As @justdoit19 said, this is what CVW is designed for... it is not necessarily a signal of USNA interest in the candidate. Some knew USNA was their destination all along, others make a course correction based on their CVW.
