CVW

skc - I would say yes, especially if your son has not yet had the opportunity to visit USNA. Our son emailed his regional director to request a CVW and also mentioned his desire for a CVW during his BGO interview. He received an invitation and attended a CVW last fall. It was a fantastic experience for him and confirmed his desire to attend USNA. :thumb:

The mid you are with fills out an evaluation sheet. Its very short, I don't know if admissions even looks at them but it does exist. Don't be stupid and piss off your mid and you should be fine. It asks whether or not the candidate would be a good midshipman which is impossible for a plebe to tell after 2 days of being followed around. Most just say, "yes, I believe so and so will be a good midshipman. Although I wasn't able to see him perform physically or academically, he seemed to have a positive attitude and understanding of the struggles he will face as well as the social skills necessary to work well in the academy environment." or "NO, he would be a terrible midshipman. His attitude/whatever is bad".

Act like you want to be there and get along with your mid and you should be fine. Don't be a tool. Don't be a joe. Flatter them and let them feel like everything they say about the academy is true. Keep your own opinions to yourself because no matter what you say he does no more about the academy than you. If he is being really negative, smile and nod and remember that if he is still there, it is because he wants to be there. You will meet a lot more than just your sponsor mid on friday night so if yours is a loser, talk one of the other plebes that comes by your room.

Wannabe2013 - What do you suggest candidates where while attending and what would be a good gift to take their midshipmen host ?

Most of the suggestions are good. Khakis and a collared shirt, but definitely bring shorts and a t-shirt and possibly a hoodie. As far as gifts go...any kind of food is good if anything at all. There's no formal gift-exchange going on. Anything will be more than what your mid expects.

Sweet!

Wow, that pretty much answered my questions and more some! Im sure it helped others too :thumb: Just hoping the mids don't see this as a downer. Seems like its gonna be a great experience

Just found this web site. I think I have read every post starting in September.

Son did not receive CVW invitation after confirmed nomination, scholastically qualified, and DodMerb qualified. Is this a bad thing, or one of those who knows things. He did request an invitation via email and the invitation was sent same day. He will attend in February.

Anyone know code for numbers on upper right hand side of scholastic confirmation letter? Any significance?

Thanks
Sounds like it will be a long 3 months

My husband said to ask the same thing about my son's appointment. The letter offering the appointment has a 4 digit number on the upper right, then underneath it 3-2014. I'm guessing the 4 digit number is some kind of tracking of the letter sent in general, or a number assigned to him, but it's not close to his candidate number or his last 4. But the next line - well, I'm guessing he wasn't the 3rd appointment for the class. Maybe the third batch?

Okay, I just went back and looked at his LOA and it's the same 4 digit number up top, so it must apply to him directly (his assigned number within the class?). But on that one underneath it says DA-3 digits-09. Dean of Academics? Just guessing here!

Interesting. I am sure I am reading too much into the numbers. My son has a 4 digit number, then SBL/080 and current date below the SBL.

Yeah, but it's always fun to try to figure things out! I'm sure it's just some kind of tracking of the letters they do that doesn't mean anything to us! Now if this was a wait list letter, than I could see stressing out trying to find out if there was some way that you could tell where they were on the list, but I don't think it matters for any of these!

I just checked my sons appointment letter too, and his has a 4 digit number, and then 3-2014 right under it, then the date, Oct 20 2009 just under that. We were thinking at the time that 3-2014 could mean that he was the 3rd appointment offer, because at that time we had only heard of 2 others, since it was in October--but obviously not the case since Marciemi's sons letter had the same thing--the world may never know!

Thank you wannabe2013 for all the information.

I will be attending the CVW in February.

Looking forward to the visit.

I do not think there is any deep meaning to those numbers you are referring to. If you will go back and look at the letters you received for summer seminar and those like the one informing you of your official candidate status, you will see that the letters and #'s on the second line correspond to the initials of the person who signed the letter and the # is probably that persons class year. The first # on the appointment letter is also the same # which was on those letters. I would assume this is similar to an assistant who initials a business letter at the bottom under the cc. line and this is the Navy's style form etc.

I am attending the CVW in February just so ya'll know.

Very excited for the visit, especially since they're paying for it!

Place to Stay

My son will be attending the CVW at the end of March, We could stya with friends in the area or a hotel in Annapolis. My question to parents that have already attended which would you suggest? Also, where would we find a schedule of events for parents for that particular weekend?

Well, the schedule I posted above was what they used from Oct/Nov and they just modified it for me to show the last 3 activities wouldn't happen when I emailed the RD's office. I would guess March would be pretty much the same (although I'm not certain of those last 3 activities, I would still think it would be too cold and not likely to have them). You could email and ask your RD, but I got the impression that the schedule wasn't actually set in stone until a couple days beforehand. I can let you know when we get back if there are any changes this time, and you could ask after people get back from the Feb one, but I'd probably use that for planning for now.

Try one of the discount travel sites and try to get a hotel in downtown Annapolis. Easy walking to the yard, ability to scope the surrounding area, etc.

I'm a MID. I've hosted candidates and we definitely submit evaluations on everyone. These evaluations are rather in depth and are the first time the academy is able to gauge your whole person qualification. Try to actively participate in your host's daily lives and show interest in the academy itself. Mids want the class of 2014 to be the best, so we'll be watching you :)

a7x, some examples...

a7x,
Thanks for the info. Sorry for the stupid question but I for one, thought the interaction with the candidates was fairly well-scripted. I'm getting the feeling from your post, I'm not correct.
For instance, when you state, "Try to actively participate in your host's daily lives and show interest in the academy itself," how does an ideal candidate appear? Not trying to get DS to fit the "role", but possibly giving some counsel on do's and don'ts.
Thanks!
