Received a desqulifying result from Dodmerb based on code D155.41 Distant visual acuity not correctable to 20/20 in each eye
Is this a condition for which one can get a waiver?
Status is under Waiver Review.
Trying to get into the Merchant Marines Acadamy
Any advice?

Each case is different, but in my case, it wasn't something that was even tested for me. It just kinda got waived.

DS received a waiver for this DQ from both USCGA and USNA. He is corrected to 20/20 in one eye but 20/30 or 20/40 (honestly can’t remember) in the other.

The official reply can be that no one here knows since we are not experts/ officials from the USMMA or DODMERB centralized office. However, I would review your candidate's results to confirm how far off your numbers are against the standards of correctible to 20/20. Merchant mariners ensure the safe and timely arrival of cargo, passengers, and vessels. They work on a variety of ships, including container ships, bulk carriers, ferries, and cruise ships- if you cannot discern that there is a piling, torpedo, tsunami wave etc even with correction, then I would have less hope for a waiver. The other/ above poster's variance was mild. Good luck

What can the vision be corrected to if it’s not 20/20?

Also, what’s the cause of the amblyopia?

The left eye is correctable to only 20/25 while the right eye is correctble to 20/20.
Not sure the cause of the amblyopia...I must have been born with it.

A waiver is possible if the one eye can be corrected to only 20/25 and the other is 20/20 provided the reason for the amblyopia is something that’s not progressive like cataracts, glaucoma, corneal ectasia, etc…

I just went back and looked at eye exam and you asked what kind of amblyopia so in notes it said: strabismic amblyopia
No other details.

Sounds like his eyes weren’t aligned right since birth.

There’s a different standard for strabismus. If he didn’t get DQ’ed for strabismus too, then he might have had it enough to cause amblyopia but not a significant amount of it.

There’s a good chance for a waiver.

Thank you for clarifying this for me. I really appreciate your input.
