DADT on the hill today

Ah, one person staterooms on a ship....wouldn't that be the life? I'm sure the people in 30 man berthing areas would think so....all we would need to dump are the weapons and magazines.

I wonder how many wouldsay I am gay to get a single berth...I know I would:biggrin:

I am not trying to make light of homosexuality.

I have a family member that is a lesbian, she is my Godmother (yes, I am catholic and she is too). I love her dearly and would want her to have the ability to fulfill all of her desires and if serving the country would make her happy, I would want to see it happen. However, I would want the logistics to be completely solved before the DADT policy is lifted. It would not bother me to room with a homosexual, but I am older and see it from not a choice option (i.e. choosing to be homosexual vs heterosexual). There are many people who do not believe it is a choice. What if you put a homosexual with someone who believs they can change. I can just imagine the poor kid being lectured by their roomie 7 days a week on how to become a heterosexual. It is not fair to the homosexual to be required to defend their sexual preference ad nauseum.

Then again there is the issue of the homosexual who has a civil union and is eligible for medical and housing benefits compared to the person that has a home of record that does not allow, thus their partner is denied benefits. You can't just say oh well I will change my HOR to that state...you need to be a resident of that state. Will they be forced to go and buy a home there so their mate can have bennies? The US govt needs to either allow civil unions nationally or not for this to work within the military. This issue must be addressed to give good morale among homosexuals that are in committed relationships. It also creates nightmares for A & F since your BAH is based on dependents. Then add DEERS and you are putting alot more into the equation, especially when you have a state like CA..yes you can have a civil union...No you can't, however those of you that did get through when we did you are still a legal union. Can you imagine MPC traversing this route?

TPG, I agree I think that we need to make sure the issues that are secondary, such as housing will be addressed concurrently with the removal of DADT.

In a dorm environment (Minus aboard ship); the only real options if allowing gays in the military is:

1) Everyone gets a private room.
2) Everyone gets to choose their room mate. (Which includes CO-ED) Sort of like a classified ad: "ROOM MATE WANTED" And list all their likes, dislikes, preferences, etc...
3) Leave things the way they are.

Gays are already serving in the military, how do they handle the rooming arrangements now?

They are neither open, nor "practicing".

Why not have coed berthing then?

Yeah that will work. I remember a Navy Suppy ship (Name eludes me know) They had a Coed Crew and on the first cruise that way most of the Females came back pregnant. Got nicknamed "the Love Boat". Samuel Gomphers I believe.

Obama shouldn't sign anything that the U.N. puts in place that tries to dictate our country's morals, values, and beliefs. That is not something the U.N. should be involved in; and as such, something Obama shouldn't be condoning. Again, he has no idea what he's doing. Why is it that I've never agreed with EVERYTHING a president has done; but I've always agreed with SOME THINGS. This includes. GW, Clinton, Bush, Regan, Carter, and Ford. But with Obama; I can't for the life of me find one thing that I can agree with that he's said or done. Hell, it's only been 2 months. Damn he scares me. Our country is not Europe, Asia, Africa, etc... Our military is an all volunteer force. Our morals and values generally have a certain level of decency that many countries I've lived in don't have. But all that aside; the U.N. is NOT MY GOVERNMENT. I don't want them telling me what is right, wrong, legal, illegal, etc... The U.N. can kiss off.

P.S. OH YEA; this is the same United Nations who called the United States Deadbeat Donors. We provide 22% of all U.N. funding; as well as military and other support world wide, and we get this crap. I'd love to see the U.N. dissolve. I'm tired of paying for all the welfare countries. I'm tired for paying for illegal immigrants. We're talking about Obama wanting to make cuts. I propose stopping all aid to the U.N. for 4 years; and providing no support whatsoever to illegal immigrants who cross our border. If they wind up in the emergency room; we'll save their life, then take them to the FURTHEST border in Mexico away from the United States.

hmm, maybe this is a telling story about the future of DADT....

The Obama administration will endorse a U.N. declaration calling for the worldwide decriminalization of homosexuality that then-President George W. Bush had refused to sign, The Associated Press has learned.

Of course, because the UN is what we are supposed to believe in.....Instead of dealing with things here, let's see how fast we can screw up by signing on the dotted line of international documents.....just a joy!
