I read a while back, but can’t find the thread; that Indoc is not the same type of pop and circumstance as the other SA. The thread spoke of a date in August, separate from Parent’s Weekend when they take their oaths. Would someone please point me in the correct direction for this info and when it occurs in 2018?

What other SA?? Assuming it's not on the website so call the Academy.

The last few years they have held the swearing in during Parents Weekend, so I would focus on that. For our 2 KP kids (2013 and 2021), we sent them across the country to INDOC alone. They did not want the distraction of family members on their first day there. They do have kind of an orientation for family members on the first day of INDOC, but you will not be able to spend any time with your Plebe Candidate and will only see him/her from a distance after the drop off. Patents Weekend will be on Labor Day weekend again this year.

Thank you, that’s helpful!

I wouldn't say it is without pomp and circumstance. Indoc starts on a different day this year, so check your calendar. But, just my .02, we would not have missed dropping DS off. There is a chance to see DS/DD running through campus, and if you have a good lens--300-500mm, you can get pictures of DS/DD. There is also the speech from the Superintendent, and then the campus closes and you leave while DS/DD march into lunch. Different strokes for different folks. No right answer there. Up to you. There used to be two weekends for parents during/end of indoc. last year they were combined in one weekend, labor day, which is also Parents weekend. Parents is a must visit. They should take their oath if the schedule is the same as last year and Mom (or whoever) can pin the insignia on the DS/DD.. To find the calendar, you can locate it on the USMMA site, or, if you are a member of the 2022 facebook page (I assume there is one set up already) the calendar will probably be in a file on that page. For the rest of the year, make it up as much as you can. If there is a sport involved, go to the events--easy way to spend at least a few minutes with your DS/DD. And, while you might not get a chance to go off campus, you can bring in a pizza or something.

I agree with @golfindad ! It was wonderful to go to Indoc and we wouldn't have missed it. That said, if funds are limited, I would definitely go to Parents Weekend over Indoc. For 2018 PWE is on Labor Day weekend as it was in 2017. Attending both is ideal though...

When you drop your DD/DS off on the morning of Indoc, you will not be able to see them (except from a distance - maybe) again that day. For the classes of 2019 and 2020, they had an Acceptance Weekend separate from Parent's Weekend where the Mids got accepted into the Regiment. With 2021, that switched back to Parent's Weekend. Plan on coming out for Parent's Weekend and be part of the acceptance ceremony/parade. I also suggest looking for a VRBO or AirBnB rental in the Bayside/Garden City/Rockaway areas as the hotels near Kings Point have small rooms and don't offer a ton of space for families to hang out - if that's what you end up doing. Of course, there's a ton to do in NYC, but if your DS/DD just wants to unwind for a bit in civilian clothes (not allowed to wear out in public as a Plebe) or just hang with the family, a house rental is really nice and less expensive than many hotels. Make plans now.

When you say Labor Day weekend is Parents Weekend, do you mean Saturday-Monday?

Not to early to book. It is a fairly busy weekend in the area, notwithstanding KP visitors. There are a couple of hotels in Great Neck, but I can't talk to them as I haven't stayed at them. There is a HI Express in Roslyn, but it is typical of HI Express' these days, which seem to be just so-so. There are a number of places around LaGuardia. There are a number of places around Carle Place and Westbury. That is about 25 minutes from campus. A car is much more convenient to have, although Uber does serve all the areas. On a weekend like parents weekend, a car is probably cheaper if you intend on eating out, possibly going to the store to buy some contraband, etc.

For parents weekend, there will be a schedule issued. It will be up in the air until the week of or so. Your plebe will not know if he will have liberty or not. Your plebe will think he will not be able to leave. He will tell you he probably can't leave. You will get upset and say that is total BS. Mom will start to get upset and complain to hubby who will say, what do you want me to do about it......That will go on for a couple days, and then, like magic, liberty will come through because the plebes met some goal. They will likely be restricted to campus Friday. They will be required to attend the parade, acceptance, etc. and if there is a football game, that as well. There is usually a rugby match. There is probably a good likelihood that your plebe will be able to be off base Saturday and Sunday evenings, with a report time of somewhere around 4-5pm Monday. Mass and religious services are likely not to be held on campus because of the holiday and weekend so double check service times if you are thinking of attending Mass/Services on campus before you make plans.

Be warned, that your plebe may not want to run around NYC on the tourist train. Sleep may be in order, or, just eating at Fridays or BWW may be all they want. If there is a roommate, or buddy whose parents are not in town, you may want to think about the offer of letting your plebe bring a buddy with them if you have the room etc. or even just to dinner.

And, finally, when the plebe gets back to campus Monday, they will learn at pkt that they screwed up big time over the weekend, because either someone was seen out of uniform, someone didn't say hello properly, someone's white shoes had scuffs on them in Times Square :) and any benefits they had earned to date will be thrown out the window, and they will go back to step one.

Wow, I really appreciate all the tips, golfindad! Another question; is parent weekend only for parents or can the family and grandparents come too?

The whole family can attend. Friends are welcome also. Just make sure those who attend are the people your DS/DD want to have there. They will be in desperate need of R&R by then.

Is it too early to start thinking about booking a hotel?

Here are some of the hotels the Academy put in the logging in booklet for 2021,

Inn At Great Neck 30 Cuttermill Road Great Neck, NY 11021 (516) 773-2000
The Andrew Hotel 75 North Station Plaza Great Neck, NY 11021 (516) 482-2900
Adria Hotel 221-17 Northern Boulevard Bayside, NY 11361 (718) 631-5900
Garden City Hotel 45 Seventh Street Garden City, NY 11530 (516) 747-3000

Attached is the link if you would like to see the rest.

@golfindad is right, that is exactly what happened to us this year with regard to Parents Weekend Liberty.

Parents weekend dates are not yet set for 2018. I would make sure your reservations/tickets are refundable at this point if you are taking the plunge.

I'm looking into an airbnb in Bayside. I am just worried about booking and for some reason the weekend gets changed; someone else was saying that they were thinking of changing the weekend because there isn't a football game that weekend?
