DE Classes Question

I am going into my Junior year of high school and plan on taking DE classes this coming year and the year after. My school does not offer any AP or IB classes, only regular, honors, and DE classes.

My question is whether service academies will place more importance on DE classes, aka give me a stronger application, as I plan on taking as many as possible.

My DS has limited AP and DE options for his senior year also. I called admissions at the Naval Academy and gave them a list of classes my DS could take. They were very helpful and helped him choose his classes. Specifically, we were trying to choose science classes. AP Physics and AP Chem were their first choice, but not available for my DS. So they recommended DE Intro to Chem and DE intro to Physics. Navy said the highest level of Chemistry and Physics available were the best choices. They also suggested AP Government as an AP class from his available choices. Admissions was very helpful and specific when talking to them. I recommend calling your preferred academy and asking directly.

Thank you very much for your response. I will call my preferred academy when I am able to.

Also, may I ask what “DS” means since I see it used around this forum a lot?

Dual Enrollment.

Our recently graduated 18 year old did his whole Sr. year at the local community college taking college courses on the county's dime. Finished with 25 credits. He only started the program as a senior, but others start as early as 10th grade. A kid can graduate HS with an Associate's degree and basically start college as a Junior in some locations.

My guy did this had his AA before his HS diploma. DE is weighted similarly to AP.

In general dual enrollment classes have a similar weight in applications as Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate. But the specific details matter.

Would you be taking rigorous college courses similar to or preparatory for academy classes? Like Calculus, Chemistry for STEM majors, calc-based physics?

Or would you be taking elective and remedial courses? Like Astronomy or College Algebra.

Is the course taught at the college by a college professor? Or at your high school by a high school teacher who is endorsed by the college?

I’m going to do DE Psychology (fall) and DE College Algebra (spring) taught at my school, and I will also do DE American Gov and DE American History online. I thought of maybe doing DE Chemistry this year but my brother heavily advises me not to do it as he considers it “academic suicide.”

Calling is absolutely good idea...but have your DS call next time. Probably will look a bit better.

Nice that you can do that. Our HS offers dual enrollment but it costs about $280 for a one semester class.

What is the highest level of math taught at your High School? I could be wrong, but College Algebra would not be preferred over Calculus at your high school.

Pre-Calculus is the highest math level taught at my school, which I am doing this coming junior year. I plan on doing Calculus in my senior year online, possible DE or not.
