Well I don't know whether this goes in the Navy forum or ROTC, so I'll probably put it in both if that's cool. A few weeks ago, I received an AFROTC scholarship (Ga Tech). Today, I just found out today that I got offered an appointment to Naval Academy. I'm supposed to be getting stuff in the mail tomorrow, but now I have to make a decision... quickly!! I've come up with some pros and cons of both. I realized that the biggest factor is this: I live like an hour or so from Tech. So, I could basically come home any time (not so in Annapolis). I know that even with ROTC, I'd still have a lot more freedom at Tech (but I guess to appreciate freedom, you have to see what it's like without it)- so that part doesn't really bother me. Really, I'm just scared of leaving home I guess. I would love to overcome this challenge but both have so much to offer. I guess I couldn't go wrong either way right? Any tips or suggestions... words of advice? Anything?!? :sadwavey:

What do you think you want to do as an officer? The Navy has more choices in terms of your role as an unrestricted line officer (SWO, Subs, USMC, Aviation) whereas if you go AFROTC you have the option of non combat billets (Finance, Intelligence, Metro, etc). Not bad either way, just a personal preference really.

It seems ROTC is what you'd enjoy more.

There are tons of people still waiting at home stalking the mail man for that appointment.

Do you want to be an officer in the Navy or in the Air Force? My recommendation would be to think farther ahead than just the college years rather than deciding on freedoms or whatnot (now if you were comparing NROTC with Academy, bit different). You're going to graduate and end up spending more time in whatever service you choose than you do at college.

we're all curious, what did you decide?

Remember, besides being away from home, if you were to attend the Naval Academy, you will not have the "same college experience".

I advise you to speak to a current mid and a kid who is in ROTC if you can. That decision is gotta come from the heart.

Your lookin' at two completely different lifestyles. A USNA midshipman isn't your average college student.

Also, like SteveHolt243 said think ahead. In the end its all about your commission. Choose carefully the branch. Taking your time might prevent you from being miserable later.

Hey guys-
I'm going Navy. I don't know what I want to do as a career so I figured the Academy would give me the best opportunity to find something. Thanks
