Declining Appointment

I was thrilled to receive my appointment to USNA for the class of 2017 a couple months ago. Unfortunately, last week I injured my leg in a freak skiing accident. I was crushed. The injury is not a break or fracture. It has something to do with a nerve in my leg. I forget the exact details, but I know that I most likely will not be ready for I-Day and Plebe Summer. I won't get to train and I will probably still experience some of the symptoms if I do end up going to Plebe Summer What I am wondering is should I decline my appointment for this year and reapply next year after going to my Plan B school or should I go into Plebe Summer knowing that I am not at 100%? I have a great college that I could attend however I have wanted to attend USNA for my whole life.

Assuming firstly that you mean class of 2021...

Second, you need to notify USNA. You will have to go through DODMERB as you now aren't medically qualified. Let the docs decide if you're ready for Plebe summer. They may rescind your appointment, they may defer you. I wouldn't just decline it.

Really sorry to hear. Contact your admissions counselor after PM'ing @Sydney C., whose DS was hurt and have to wait a year, assuming you will have a full recovery.

Best of luck!

Sincerely,

KT

Edit: agree with @pleber16. There is a huge difference between they tell you not this year and declining!

Ensure you have a full diagnosis from a doctor with diagnosis, rehab, time to heal, etc. call admissions with this info. Do NOT decline your appointment. Admissions will work with you but they need all the medical info before they can. If it will be a prolonged rehab USNA may go ahead and say not this year. Can't guarantee anything as none of us are admissions, but this happens to a handful of kids each year. The usual course of action has been to issue an LOA pending medical clearance. It might be smart to go ahead and invest in a deposit for your Plan B to ensure that is in place.

Are we supposed to be calling ourselves class of 2017 or class of 2021?

Your class year is the year you graduate, at any college.

While a good question, it is so funny to hear it. You call yourself by the year you will graduate. It is your lifetime identity in ways that you cannot possibly understand yet. Your upperclassman may try to trick you into saying their class year. So, you are the Class of 2017 in high school (if you are in high school) but you are the Class of '21 at USNA.

Best wishes for full evaluation and fast and successful rehab to USNA Hopeful. He did the right thing by asking here. Good luck.

Hopeful...I'm the Sydney C. KT has referenced. First, follow the advice provided by Hoops exactly as noted. Second, (and you're a long way away from this at this juncture), IF you go through the process and it's determined you're medically DQ'd, PM me and I'll take you through the process my DS went through with USNA two years ago when he found himself in that situation.

Here's to a speedy recovery and you won't take it personally if I say I hope I don't hear from you.

Contact Sydney C. from above let him guide you.

That may be too much... but if your DD likes to engage in risky behaviors you got to do what you got to do...

I thought sharing with her about someone on the forum got in a ski accident and now is in jeopardy would be a good lesson learned.
