Defense Official: Obama Calling for Defense Budget Cuts - Presidential Politics | Political News - FOXNews.com

The new administration has called for a 10% real dollar reduction from the DoD. The JCS are meeting this weekend to reveiw expenditures and find programs for cuts. Looks like the only gov agency not getting a bailout is the DoD. Thanks Mr President.

Fantastic.... I get the feeling the AF will be hit pretty hard with this one.

Tankers?? you want tankers??? .. ouch..... not good for Boeing either....
.

It's so we can afford the Digital Cable vouchers.....

...oh wait, I already have digital cable (HDTV too)....guess it's a good time not to work for DoD...

LOL.. vouchers... LOL

glad CG and MMA are non DOD programs!!

I'd love to go off into the Wild Blue Yonder... but I don't know if there'll be enough funds to let that happen.

I'm pretty sure we could cut 10% from the DoD budget without significant damage to capabilities (maybe even no damage).

...Could...

Now, who believes that will actually happen?

Say hello to smaller pay raises and cuts in BAH to start with, I bet they mess with the retirement plan and medical (In the 80's OTC products were free, just went to the pharmacy and asked for it, 1 of the 1st thingto go) also. It's easy to cut 10% without touching hardware. Anything that is not NAF can be touched. Bowling Alleys, Movie theatres, gyms, no new base housing, no base housing renovations, instead of 2 guards (the non military) there will be 1 and the ask the MPS to fill in more. Contractors such as electricians will have their time cut, instead of 40hr they will be 35, you'll just wait longer to get the circuit working.

Start looking around the base you will quickly see how every base could cut 10% out without batting an eye (in theory...of course morale will suck and people will bail as soon as the economy comes back)

Add ina BRAC and a RIF you are there plus some.

Brings back memories, if we could all go back and fit in our acid was jeans, caprezio shoes and buy some VO-5 hairspray it would be like time stood still

Here's an idea for the AF Chief...stop f*ing with the uniforms, leave it alone and call it a day...I am sure that would say some money right off the bat. Another idea...enough with the changing of the slogans, by keeping it the same for at least one decade, you won't need to pay millions to a marketing company that determines why people join the AF...Anybody care if it is Aim High or Above All?

I think it is a little early to get our tighty whities all in a bunch. Historically, the democrats have been okay with salaries. It is 'checks and balances' at work. They will go after the high cost toys which the republicans have pushed.

Another area in which the democrats are sensitive is the military infrastructure. It is in a shambles now due to all the money being funneled to the mideast. Housing, hospitals, office and support buildings stimulate the economy with the maximum number of jobs for those who need jobs. Look for construction contracts to increase.

The mideast also has been a blank checkbook which, with more oversight, might yield a substantial savings.

In the not so distant past, funding was cut so much that ships could not get underway as often because they did not have the money to pay for the fuel.

Reduction in pay? Probably not. Slower pay raises that are not in step with inflation, probably.

I just want my tax credit, Digital TV voucher, and whatever else I was promised.

There will be a lot more of cannibalization happening on every base. I remember one time Bullet looked at the tires of the jet and he said to the crew chief that they were looking a little bad...he was told not to worry, those tires have at least 3 more flights...Bullet was double turning on the jet that day...he lucked out it was the next guy who had a closer scare:shake:

Well now that Bullet is a contractor...I am really glad he took the 35 job and not the 22.

I don't think construction jobs will increase at all, I think they will re-open prison on bases like SJAFB, so they can cut costs. Prisoners use to be kitchen help at the clubs. They cleaned up garbage on post. Painted the buildings, etc. That was when money was tight...when it started to flow, they took them away and gave it to contracting companies. The hospital that my kids were born in, no longer has a maternity ward, you go on the economy. The AF use to have all of their dentists as officers, now many are contractor dentist. We no longer have the infrastutucture to make it efficient for the hospitals. Go to any base hospital, retirees are now being reduced in the amt they will take...you will be forced to use tri-care. Bullet only retired in August, we can not go to any military hospital here (the kids and I), there is no room at the inn (We have Belvoir, Bolling, Andrews, Quantico, Meade, Bethesda, and Reed in our radius).

If you have ever lived in base housing you know they won't see 1 dime. We lived on post at Ft Leavenworth for major school, our friend laughed when he saw our house, it had not been touched or renovated since his Dad was a major and they were living there (25 yrs) They now charge the military member to rent a fence.

Contracts for tanks, boats and planes all have stipulations in them...they will move foward with them, because the amt of people that Lockheed would fire would be counterproductive.

So in the end, say hello to lower pay raises, currently locked at 1% above inflation, it will be put the same as fed jobs 1% below. Say goodbye to bonuses at the 8 yr mark and the 15 yr marker. It will go up to a higher yr @10, and lose the 15. They may even cut the amount. Be real airlines aren't hiring...no need to be paying the guy at 15, to stay until 20.

My brother says the same thing. He recently retired AF.

It's actually a pretty simple process / solution. Expect the Fiscal Year 10 budget, which had already been vetted by the Pentagon and approved by congress, to be rescinded back to the FY 09 dollar amount. (There was a 10% increase this year for the FY10 budget, remove that and you have your 10% decrease). Also expect a smaller supplemental for the war efforts, especially since troops will be starting to return and we will ask Iraq to start paying some of the re-construction expenses.

What rolling back to FY09 dollars means is a cut in several expensive programs, with little impact to pay and benefits. My opinion, say goodbye to some F-22s and F-35s, some of the funding for the the Army's Future Combat System, and some of the Navy's new ships. What I would like to know is where we will get th emoney to increase the Army and Marine's troop strength, which was a prominent campaign platform for our new President.

What this really means is the military, as a whole, will have to re-asses priorities and how we plan for future conflcits. Busy times in my office for the next few months...

I assumed the F-22 orders would be canceled, but I'm really hoping not too many F-35s are cut.

I think the following summary of the House Military Construction subcommittee will show the emphasis on both medical and housing construction for the foreseeable future. For FY 2009, 3.6 billion dollars more than the President wanted:

As Bullet states, The Navy and AF will feel the crunch in procurement.

Hopefully, we have learned our collective lessons about cannibalization.

The following is a good summary of the quality-of-life hits that mostly our young enlisted have endured since the commencement of the war on terrorism. Hopefully whatever is left of the 20% increase next year will begin to turn things around.

You can be sure this is the beginning not the end. Bullet is certainly closer to the process right now, but I have seen this happen before. I was at the middle of my AF career when we had twice the number of numbered Air Forces, not to mention the wings and Squadrons that followed. The Army had several more Divisions, and the Navy had more then 500 ships.

The Presidents language has often masked his real intentions. During the campaign he talked about demilitarzing space, and eliminating nuclear resources and testing. These remarks were hidden and masked by his oft mentioned "I will earn your trust" qoutes. Time will tell, but I expect deep cuts and real personnel cuts. This will be done as a reshaping effort.
