Deferred applicant scheduled for review

Thank you for your response and insight. My son was talking to several D1 coaches, but once he got the offer from AF, he told them he had committed to play for AF and stopped communication. He was also talking to West Point (they told him they were getting ready to offer him a spot, but he had already committed to play for AF and didn’t entertain the thought). My son is definitely a man of his word and won’t reach out to other schools, and I’m not even sure what he would tell them at this point.

Where he is playing now, just had a college showcase and they had over 30 coaches there watching the players, but my son (since he was already committed) just got to play 45 minutes. They were focused on allowing the kids to play that hadn’t committed in from of the coaches. I know rosters are filling up and I hate not having a plan B. With that said, I try not to push my anxieties on him, but…..lol.
Everything I've ever read about Service Academies has been to *always* have a plan B. Even if you are the best athlete in the country, that doesn't mean you will necessarily meet all of the other qualifications for an SA or that you will pass the DODMERB medical requirements. Until your son has an appointment offer from USAFA, I would recommend he be actively working on a plan B.

Thanks and I agree. Thankfully, he has his 3Qs and nomination in, but the unknown is scary. I’ve tried to get him to consider a back up plan but don’t want to push to much. He’s in a really competitive environment and I don’t want to get in his head. He did reach out to the coach today and hopefully, we get some reassurance. I’ll wait a week or two and start pushing him more if we are still waiting. Thank you again for your input,

VaCadetmom is correct, CGA is D3 so a different process somewhat. With Service academies There are never any guarantees. My DS needed a medical waiver and didn’t receive that until late May which is past the normal school commitment timeline. What he did was spoke with Plan B coach and committed there with the understanding that if everything fell in line with CGA that was his first choice and would be attending CGA. Plan B coach wasn’t happy but was understanding. We were also lucky that the housing deposit was only couple hundred dollars so didn’t lose out on a lot of money. Does your DS have any other scholarship offers? If not then not as big of an issue. I do know that athletes can decommit from any offer legally to attend a service academy. How honest you want to be with other coaches is up to you. My son chose the 100% honest approach, it was a tough conversation but he felt better in the long run.
With the late waiver was your son still able to got to the academy or did he have to wait a year to get in?

My son has been accepted to Coast Guard and is recruited to play a sport but he needs a waiver. Last communication my son told me the academy is already considering the waiver but I am nervous for him since it's already February.

Waivers usually take forever, so I would hang on tight!

My DS was offered CGAS and yes he was able to attend, currently at NAPS. He did have Plan B and committed to Plan B (completely honest with coach about Coast guard) but withdrew commitment once coast guard was 100%. Only lost a couple hundred on housing deposit but well worth it in the long run. Waivers can take a long time or be very quick. Should stay in touch with coach as he/she will have more info and be sure to get wavier authority anything they need ASAP, that will expedite the process on your end. Best of luck.

Sounds like he is in a very good situation. One thing that I have personally learned in this process and first year at prep school for my DS is patience and to let my DS take the wheel. My wife and I were very involved parents and quickly learned that we are now consultants, if that makes sense. Mr. Mullen with his paragraph 4 post opened my eyes quickly 😳😂

Thanks. It makes perfect sense. We were super involved and pretty much all up in his business. It’s been difficult having him in Spain and having no control at all over the last 7 months. He’s done surprisingly well. A few months into it, he called and said, “I can’t believe I’m the most responsible and cleanest kid here.” I guess that was his way of thinking us for all the structure, lol.

How do you know how long waivers take? Isn't it subjective depending on the medical issue?
Someone I know who finish the medical process in August had to wait until December to get his waiver. It does vary from issue to issue, but usually they all take a good amount of time

From what I've heard, USCGA is not going to even start looking at medical waivers until they have decided to offer you an appointment. They are small and do not have the man-power to consider medical waivers for all applicants. They make the decision on appointments first, and then start considering medical waivers for only those who they have given a conditional appointment to.

Waivers are never guaranteed… even if the condition is “easily” waiverable. Always have a plan B … coming from a Mom of an “easily waiverable” kid who wasn’t able to get a waiver

Last year my DS was deferred and didn’t hear anything until second week of March. His coach told them that deferred applicants are reviewed in later rounds of RA. No news is good news, focus on what you can control, DODMerb, plan B, etc…
Did he receive it through bears den or did the coach call him?

Yes he is in CGAS. They send CC’s to three different prep schools, NAPS being one of them.
The other two CGAS schools are Georgia Military College in Milledgeville, GA, and Marion Military Institute in Marion, AL.
NAPS is the third in Newport, RI. Not sure how true it is, but I've been told more of the competitive athletes go to NAPS. Also NAPS is a on an actual military base; "Naval Station Newport".
