My DS recieved the below E-mail today. It appears to be good news as it seems they are taking a close look at him. Does anyone know what deferred status means in this situation?

At the present time, your record is deferred by the Admissions Board until this office receives your 1st semester grades. If your transcript has not been sent at this present time, please have your school counselor send in your updated transcript with 1st semester grades as soon as possible, so that your record can be reviewed again by the Admissions Board.

Here are the 1st semester grades we will send them.

2743 AP Calc BC-A B- 5.0000 5
4652 AP Economics A 5.0000 5
1637 AP Lit & Comp A B 5.0000 5
3550 H Microbiology A 5.0000 5

SAT math - 740 - CR 700
ACT math - 32 - E - 29

CVW visit in October and recieved MOC nom yesterday. Any advice would be appreciated as this forum has been a Godsend during this process.

Deferred

I think it has been stated on this forum before that a deferred status is usually given to those candidates whose application is not strong enough for an appointment nor is it weak enough for a rejection. As long as your haven't received the TWE, you're still in it.

Also, the Academy states that ALL candidates who are still in the running (and probably already have nominations) are required to submit mid-year transcripts; AND all appointees are required to submit year-end reports. No big deal - I think it's just a rite-of-passage. I'm assuming you received a nomination at about the same time the transcript was requested?

My nomination showed up on my portal about 10 days ago and I have not received an email about deferment...is this good? Or does it not mean anything at all?

As I mentioned in an earlier post, DS received an email requesting his first semester transcript the same day the Academy received his nomination but that email mentioned nothing about him being deferred. I think that was just semantics as the request emails are drafted by different examiners representing different admission regions.
That said, I do know that admissions requires first semester transcripts from all appointees and still active candidates.
I think I would check with your admissions counselor. Everyone we are aware of received a transcript request within a couple of days of being nominated.
Are you in a district where the congressman submits a principal nomination along with a list of alternates? That might make a difference.

No I am not, just competitive ones. I haven't gotten any emails from USNA...perhaps I should contact my RD. I guess I'm just not sure about the 1st semester transcript because my marking period does not end until Jan 29 or something, and new grades will be coming much later than that.

Bubalma, where did you see that USNA requires all candidates to submit 1st semester grades? Son has not received this request. He has had a nomination for almost a month now.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. I only remember hearing about a final transcript needed.

We were told this by both our BGO and our RD. You are correct - final transcripts are also required from appointees to verify that there wasn't any high school grade slippage.

Our son has had nominations for over a month as well. So far, no request for 7th semester transcript either.

My DS received an email from Admissions too (2 days prior to receiving his nomination notification) and it said nothing about being deferred either, just requested his 1st semester transcript - we live in TX.

First semester transcript

My DD submitted her transcript in August prior to her senior year. She has received no email requesting first semester grades from her senior year. Her application was complete in Sept and she has a nom. Do we need to send in her first semester senior year grades now? Do all candidates need to do this?

I think it would be good to if she had the grades. I should probably send mine in too. Even though my app says complete I think I read somewhere in the Instructions to Candidate booklet that you have to submit updated transcripts.

Just saw this posted on FB in response to someone's question:

"Seniors are asked to submit first semester grades as well. They can be sent to the Office of Admissions at 52 King George Street Annapolis, MD 21402."

(Listed under the "Recent Posts by Others" on the right hand side)

This whole deferred/not deferred thing is all kind of confusing. My USNA portal has had my nom for 2 weeks now, with no notice of needing to send in a 1st semester transcript. I emailed my RD and he said that I don't need to send in my 7th semester transcript (if offered an appt, then I need to send in 8th semester once school's over and that's finalized). Perhaps it's a case-by-case thing?

DS mailed his official transcript as soon as he got them without a request. What could it hurt? I think it shows follow through, motivation and if your grades are as good as before or better, it could only help your profile.

My DS never got a request for updated grades, but is in the process of getting them sent.

I did see this on the USNA Facebook page...

We ask for the first semester senior grades as a supplement to the application to assist the board in making their decision and showing the progress of the student, but if the grades are not available on the 31st, they can be sent in when they become available.
