I just asked my DS about the status of his ROTC scholarship app and he said everything is complete except the interview. he requested one from a list provided several weeks ago and we never got a response. im assuming this will hold up his packet from being evaluated at the January board if we don't get it scheduled, completed and sent in the next week or so correct?

he wasn't clear on who can do his interview so he asked the person at the Navy office nearby and they gave him a few names and he reached out asking for an interview but got nowhere. I hope he doesnt miss the deadline.

Did reaching out include making phone calls? I'd get it done ASAP as time needs to be allowed to get the results of the interview in the system. It wouldn't hurt to call the person he first reached out to in the Navy Office either. This isn't something I would sit back on. Over Christmas I can understand not being contacted, but after the first of the year I would have been working the phone.

By 'the Navy office nearby' do you mean a local recruiting station? If so, I recommend your DS call the nearest NROTC unit and request to have the interview conducted with them. If they cannot accommodate, call the NROTC units at the schools your DS has listed on his application and ask them. As you are still under the 2019 application window, having an NROTC officer conduct the interview is not a requirement, but you might get better customer service.

Important to note for those looking ahead....it becomes a requirement for 2020 applications to have the interview conducted by an NROTC officer.

http://www.nrotc.navy.mil/ "Please note that for the 2020 application all Officer Interviews must be conducted by an Officer at an NROTC Unit."

Does your son have a Nrotc school in mind? My son did his interview with the NROTC unit leader of his 1st choice college. Nrotc college units interview too.

he's interested in NROTC at all the schools he applied to. his #1 choice is far away though so not something we can get to in person in a few days notice.

When applying for my NROTC scholarship two years ago, I did my interview at a school that wasn’t even in the top 5 of mine listed. I emailed them a few times, only to get no response. When the deadline was nearly I ended up having to call another LT at the unit, whose office info I found online. Turns out the LT I was originally emailing had left the unit 1 day before I emailed, and the person in charge of my ROTC application for my district/area didn’t know, which is why all my emails went unanswered. Do not be afraid to continue trying to contact them, as the earlier the interview is done the better !

Surely he is interested in a college with an NROTC unit that is closer? Hell, even if he's not interested in the unit he could still interview there, just be prepared to answer the question as to why you're not interested in that college.

yes there is one in state so he called them today, he said he had it listed in the top5 on the app as it was a a requirement I think. he applied there EA and should hear in about a week

My son did his interview at a school he did not apply to, as it was the only in-state program. It happens to be at an Ivy League school, so it was fairly easy to explain why he wasn't applying there. It did not seem to be a problem, as all of his paperwork has been approved and we are just waiting to see if he will be awarded a scholarship.

Good for him. He is required to list a school where he can get in-state tuition. Usually that's an in-state college.
