So I live in Utah and I got denied to the Summer Seminar. It is wierd because I got into both navy's and army's seminars and I will attend navy's. I was wondering if I didn't get in because I live so close and the Academy is well represented here. Not trying to make excuseses but I have the GPA the test scores and the clubs. Could this be a reason why I didn't get into the seminar?

Yes. Summer Seminar is used for recruiting.

That absolutely could be the reason. Especially if you live nearby, don't let this discourage you from continuing your application. As Roman said, Summer Seminar is a sales tool - designed to get some awareness of the academy out to the GAP (Great American Public), so of course they target underrepresented areas. Doesn't mean you can't get in if you live nearby or in a well-represented area, but it can certainly be more difficult!

Don't worry about it. The only difference between NASS and USAFA SS is that NASS is physically harder and at USAFA you get to see the airfields. Last year I thought going was HUGE deal. As it turned out, my first choice- the school I'm attending, USMA- was the one I turned down 'cause I didnt think it was what I wanted at the time. Enjoy NASS, challenge yourself at mock sea trials, and try to get to USAFA for a visit in the fall. Visits, I feel, are actually more beneficial, because all the stuff you get at briefings in the seminar can be found online *here, for instance). The experience of seeing an actual day at the academy is much more useful to a prospective cadet.

NO.

Contrary to popular belief, SS is not used for recruiting "per se."

Of course, anything that brings folks to USAFA/USMA/USNA, etc... is a "recruiting" program HOWEVER...that's not the motivation/reason behind it in the sense I think you're asking.

Summer Seminar allows the academy to see a wide breadth of students from all over the USA. It will show immediately who is interested and will give an idea to the academy what their qualifications are, etc.

Will you be "non selected" because you're in Utah and Colorado is close by? NO. I think I could contact the Liaison Officer Director (LOD) of Utah and he/she would be proud to tell me that "XX" number of students have been selected for all three sessions. Your locality to USAFA has ZERO impact to your selection. FYI, Colorado usually has a nice selection to SS, as does my state of Arizona...and we're NOT nearby really. Location means nothing.

Why were you selected to the other two and not USAFA? Who knows? Well, actually, I do know "who" knows but I can't post the name here. Did you meet with the ALO assigned to your school, did they write up a form on you, etc...etc...etc...there are a number of things and you STILL might not be selected.

Do NOT think that the "qualifications" for all the academies are the same because they are NOT. One is not harder than the other, however on any given day candidate "X" will be selected and "Y" won't, by one academy, but selected by the other.

Don't worry about not being selected...won't hurt you a bit if you decide to compete for USAFA! Consider the fact that you were SELECTED by two of the most prestigious schools in America to attend their programs!

Pretty amazing achievement, I think! :thumb:

academy7, I know you're anxious, but this thread is about Summer Seminar. Hang in there. mike.

i'm sure you're disappointed by not getting accepted to SS. i know exactly how you feel, because i was denied as well. i was still pretty quickly accepted into the Academy though, and have thrived here. call it confidence or arrogance (I don't really care) but i know i'm better well-rounded than some people who got into SS when I didn't. it's just life. attend one of the other two if you want, and still apply to where you want to go. but even getting denied SS doesn't mean you can't be in the top 5% of your class here.

Drew_22,
My daughter was denied USAFA SS too, but will attend NASS and SLS--like you. There are only so many slots and sooooo many outstanding kids. Have fun and enjoy the summer sessions that you do attend--you've earned it!

Will you update your resume with USAFA--for admission purposes--to reflect your attendance and acceptance to NASS? Is that appropriate and/or acceptable?

Thoughts anyone?

Yes you should update your resume to reflect attendance.

Hi!

I've posted this a few times and sadly, as I get...more senior  I don't always remember where I've posted.

DEFINITELY put this on your resume! The SA's view your selection VERY HIGHLY as it's a huge indication of interest (both yours and at least one SA's) and a HUGE indication of leadership potential.

That being said, DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT take my above comment to mean that since you were not selected by USAFA that they are not interested! FAR FROM IT! We ALO's have been told that this year...another RECORD YEAR of applications and qualifications!!! :thumb: KUDOS to each and everyone of you that made it all the way through the screening! It was TOUGH TOUGH TOUGH!

If you were selected, congratulations! Now take great advantage of it. If you were NOT selected, DO NOT GIVE IT ANOTHER THOUGHT! It will NOT impact/affect your competitiveness for admission ONE BIT.

Yes, each SA looks at the fact that you were accepted as a good thing BUT...it does NOT give you any "advantage" in the admissions process. EVERYONE starts over in the fall.

So...never forget the ultimate goal: 2Lt bars on your shoulder and a wonderful opportunity from that point onward! The 4 years at ANY SA is an amazing time; filled with opportunities that the VAST majority of people will NEVER experience and won't understand. 4 years of that, then a commission, and then what follows... :thumb:

You've heard this before from ALL "old people" but...I raised my right hand on 25 June 1979...yes, that would be just short of 31 years ago.

And it has FLOWN by!!!

What that tells me is simply this...

I'VE HAD A LIFETIME OF FUN AND IT'S NOT OVER YET!!! :thumb:

I envy all of you...the experiences you have TO COME... :wow:

I was accepted to AFASS, SLS, and USNA SS, but I'm only going to the first two since that's all I have time for this summer. Should I still put my USNA SS acceptance on my resume since I'm not actually going?

Just thought I would let you know, that is a bad way to build relationships with anyone. Going off topic in these forums is not a good thing to do anyway, but saying that to one of the wisest, most helpful members on here wasn't very smart. You can go around and say whatever you want in every thread, but it won't help you get an appointment. If that is how you respect those in authority, maybe we know why you are still waiting for an appointment. If you do get in, I doubt your future cadre will look very kindly upon that statement (yes, they are on here).

Later,

Brian

I would say that anything directed at anyone specific that would not yeild more information not previously attained should be kept in "private messages." That's what they're there for. If you'd like to express your opinion, private message me. I'd love to hear and respond.

*For those of you new or looking through this forum, this would benefit from you. And airforceacademy7, please don't think that everyone is directing anything at you. I will attest that all of us have said some things that will bite us in the butt later on. We all just smile and keep on going. Especially you, bsaEagle07... ;)
