@tallbutshort, this is the way I see it, my own opinion only. I think it won't hurt to just mention on your app that you were selected for NASS, and put it out there that you were "good enough" to be selected. However, I think the point of including these kinds of things on the application is to show that you probably got some kind of experience out of it. Do you know what I mean? Because whatever thing you're applying to would probably know your qualifications so although it can't hurt to put down NASS selected, I don't think it would help? Just my two cents.

DEFINITELY put this on your resume! The SA's view your selection VERY HIGHLY as it's a huge indication of interest (both yours and at least one SA's) and a HUGE indication of leadership potential.

Thanks for this, Steve! My Son and I were trying to decide if he should list his summer seminar acceptances on his CV. We were concerned it might be viewed negatively as not being committed to a single academy.

He has preferences now, but also wants to see the others to learn more about them and a potential career in their service as an officer as well.

Sounds like once he attends he should update his info. Or should he update even now? I think he can still update his USAFA EC's online. USMA & USNA is not online yet if I recall.

He can update "at his leisure" but definitely do it. This is a biggie; and no matter where he goes, the fact he was selected is a big resume item.

Resume heading

Steve, the AFA wants these headings on a resume:

academic achievement
athletic achievements
civic involvement
work/job experience
leadership positions

So, my question is: Under what heading would you recommend putting accepetance into NASS & SLS? Where would you list Girls State?

And, can you add a category to the resume format (ie extra curricular activities--or is doing that a resume faux pas??)

Thanks everyone for responding. This whole process would not be going as smoothly for us if it weren't for your constructive comments and invaluable advice.

I think that resume format was specifically for summer seminar. The format my ALO sent me, for future reference, was in the format of a standard resume.

KveTina was correct; that was the typical SS resume.

HOWEVER...if you want to use that one, go for it!

I would put NASS and SLS under LEADERSHIP as well as Girls State. They're typically considered leadership opportunities.

Extracurriculars...that can be community, school, etc...just make sure they're listed.

Bottom line on the resume: it's used to assign points to EVERYTHING EVER DONE since day 1 of 9th grade. Nothing prior is looked at. Okay, if your candidate was given an award personally by the POTUS, Governor of your state, won the USCG Lifesaving Medal in Gold or Silver prior to 9th grade...then put it down, otherwise: day 1 of 9th grade!

AND NOTHING IS TOO SMALL!!! Especially when speaking with the ALO. We want to know EVERYTHING! That way we can write a completely descriptive evaluation of the candidate and they can get maximum points.

In the end...the points...ALL of them from ALL areas will make up the WCS (weighted composite score) and that is what determines the appointments.
