My son is missing one of his back teeth and we are worried about the dental examination on R day. Should we be or are they more concerned with gum diseases. I really rather not pay for an implant if I don't have to.

I think they are mostly concerned with badly decayed teeth and/or serious peridontal disease.
They won't send him home for a missing molar. He may want to inquire about an implant or bridge when he sees the dentist. I know some cadets have gotten braces.

You will have a statement of dental health filled out by your family dentist prior to R day...that info will come to you before too long.

^ yep IIRC, you have to send back panoramic x-rays as well.

During Beast all New Cadets see a dentist for a cleaning and any needed dental work - i.e. fillings.

Implants

Our boy has been accepted in to the USMMA. He shattered both front teeth in a wrestling tournament in December. We were considering implants also. Unfortunately, after a visit with the Oral Surgeon last week we learned that there is not time for front teeth implants prior to Indoctrination. He said that Front teeth implants take a minimum of 6-7 months after the gums have had time to heal from the trauma (we only have 5). He did mention that back teeth implants take less time. Thankfully, the USMMA said that they are fine with a flipper (basically a retainer with false teeth). He will just have to survive with the flipper for the next four years (which by the way saves me $8,000 since our insurance wont pay for implants).

You may want to ask this question on the DODMerb board. He provided good guidance to us on the missing teeth issue also.

Good luck

I think it's prefectly fine if it doesn't interfere with how well her performs his tasks.

Do they dq you for any of those things?
What other dental issues are candidates dq'd for?
