Depositing at a civilian university when you have an academy acceptance

We are doing the same, DD accepted a local university where she has full tuition scholarship. In the event of any unforeseen event, will day commute from home.

That’s very smart (local and commuting). My son’s local options weren't great and I had no steam left in me to debate with him about it lol. Hopefully getting to the academy and through summer training goes off without a hitch and we don’t have to move to the civilian backup.

Thanks to suggestions here - our DS reached out to two of his state universities and they both agreed to refund both admissions and housing deposit should the need arise. Our DS chose one and put deposits down. Also reached out to AFROTC units and they indicated he had till the end of basic to trigger his scholarship. Very nice responses all around and fortunate to have great back up plans. Now let’s hope he and none of these kids on this forum need them!

^^ Good reason to have that discussion with the civilian colleges. Waiting on an appointment from a SA is a lot different from just not being able to make up your mind which college to attend and putting down multiple deposits. Many civilian colleges understand the SA appointment process takes longer and many of the steps are not within the applicant's control. They are generally supportive of what you are doing if you discuss it with them. The ones that are not, well at least you can avoid unwanted financial surprises down the road.

Hi Everyone, whether to deposit at a civilian university, even though our son has an academy acceptance has been something we thought long and hard about. There are several past threads on the forum on this topic. We spoke to the Army ROTC ROO at the college and that solidified our choice of depositing. My son later accepted his academy offer. At that time, we did not notify or reflect any status changes with the civilian university.

Fast forward to now when we have to sign up for housing at the civilian university and a number of additional concerns came up. We decided to have our son contact the university with the below note. I’m sharing it in case it is helpful to anyone in a similar situation. I know we struggled to come up with the language so I figured sharing this now might save someone else some drafting time. I’ll let you know how it goes!

Dear admissions and housing,

I have received an offer of appointment to a federal service academy. My offer is contingent on my remaining medically qualified through the end of July. Because there is a chance of an injury changing my medical status, I do NOT want to rescind my acceptance to your university at this time. I would like to make that decision at the end of July and I understand that I will forfeit my $500 deposit with you if I am able to attend the service academy.

What I am uncertain of is how to handle your housing registration. I would like to understand the financial implication of signing up for housing now and potentially withdrawing at the end of July, assuming I am medically qualified to attend the service academy at that time. Please explain what additional amount I may be responsible for if I were to withdraw from housing at the end of July related to federal service academy attendance.

Thank you in advance for your guidance.
Silly question....since midship or cadets are considered active duty wouldn't they be able to break the contract if that was the case?

I’m not aware of any law that would allow that. What would the rationale be for allowing them to break a school contract because they are active duty?

Hello!
Not sure if you are still on the forum but I thought I would give it a shot!
So my son received his USAFA appointment and he also has been accepted to a couple schools + also received a Type 2 AFROTC scholarship.

You mentioned that you all reached out to the AFROTC unit and the scholarship can be triggered after USAFA basic training = is that right?
My question is: what did you do on the AFROTC portal where there is a button for accepting the scholarship and it states must be accepted by May 31 2022? Can you accept and then cancel later if son/dght gets hurt and then needs to attend college w/ AFROTC?

Thanks for any insight!!

I would guess that you have to report to the academy...I don't know.... I was thinking like when active duty gets deployed ............. now you know why my user name lol

I think the distinction is that appointees are not required to report in, as they are not on active duty until they sign final paperwork and take the oath. They can roll over, go back to sleep and say, “nope, not gonna go” on I-Day morning. Happens every year.

For military folks who have signed a lease, and then receive orders to leave the area, that is a covered reason to break a lease without penalty. We were in CA and had leased a car there, which had a clause that it could not be taken OCONUS. I received unexpected orders to Pearl Harbor, I went and got the boilerplate statement from the base JAG, took my orders and statement to the dealer, and we were released from the lease, no penalty. These types of situations may be what you are thinking of. I was a military member under orders to report elsewhere; I had no choice that didn’t have severe consequences.
