Hello, I just found out that I did not receive the Marine Option NROTC. I am going to reapply next year and just wanted some suggestions on what I should do to help my package.

290+ PFT
4.0 GPA
1350 SAT

Top Varsity Men's Junior Rowing Club in the US

Started non-profit benefitting veterans transitioning to civilian jobs

Presidential Community Service Award

Started own clubs at school

President of local volunteer group

Letters of recommendation from General & Colonel that I have known personally

If you are pursuing the NROTC MO route, enroll as a college program Mid at a university you can afford that has NROTC. Do well and establish yourself as a MO Mid. Also have plan B, C, etc. in place beyond the NROTC route.

Did you punch the officer at the officer interview or something?? Surprised to hear you weren't selected based on stats above....

Enroll as a College Program mid. The unit/MOI you go to will get you across the finish line during freshman year. We have Marine option CP students at Tulane with lesser stats earn 4-year Nationals and side loads each year.

Was your portal updated?

Wow, those are some impressive stats for sure, sorry to hear you were passed over. If you don't mind me asking, how were you notified?

I am very surprised as well. I tried to find out what caused my package to not be selected and was unable to find an answer. I also tried to ask what I could possibly do for the next board to improve and couldn't get an answer for that as well except for maybe try to boost my GPA.

My DS did not have your stats and was declined (by NROTC/MO) two years ago. He ended up enrolling as a non contract Army ROTC cadet at a State University.

He was awarded a 3 year AROTC scholarship in his freshman year which was later extended another half year.

He will commission in 2019.

@kinnem's DS did the same with NROTC/MO as a college programmer and earned a 3 year Marine "side load " scholarship.

The point is just move forward. There is more than one way to get to the promised land!

My son went through the same thing -- except he never heard from anyone the first go around.

Bottom line...don't give up.

OP: Sorry to hear plan A didn't work out. If you want to be a Marine Officer I encourage you to kick down doors and find a way.

To future readers of this thread... There is much more in earning a scholarship than a strong PFT, GPA, Test Scores, Interviews, etc. The OP is proof of that. The determined find a way.

Not surprising as the USN MO ROTC scholarship is hyper competitive. My son's group had kids who were admitted to Harvard and Yale and did not qualify for the scholarship.

Wow, your stats are impressive! If you don't mind me asking, how did you find out your PFT score?

CapeMom: The scoring system for the Marine Corps PFT is widely available on the internet. 5 pts per pull up, etc. The scoring and aggregate classification can be found using google.

One key point. Do not overthink stats. Some have gotten scholarships with "lesser" stats, some have been denied scholarships with "greater" stats. A lot of a factors figure in -- from the competition in your district, the interviews and evaluation by the Marines doing the interviews, timing of paperwork submission, and even sometimes foul ups.

The important thing is to press onward if you're serious. Enroll as a college program mid -- and make a favorable impression. (Long story short for my son -- his MOI was on the scholarship board the second go around.) Look into other commissioning options like Platoon Leader's Class. Go "hey diddle diddle straight up the middle" with your plan.
