Difference between TWE and waitlisted?

For a 3Q candidate, is there any difference between a TWE and being waitlisted? In other words, does West Point just leave you as a waitlisted candidate if you are otherwise qualified? Or does waitlist really still stand a chance?

All 3Q + Nom candidates are placed on the NWL (wait listed) until they are appointed or sent a TWE. USMA sends the TWE when they are reasonably certain that the candidate will not receive an appointment. The goal is to balance the desire for a timely response with the possibility an appointment could still be offered. In practice the TWE does not mean that the candidate is taken off the NWL. It means that their WCS is not high enough to give them a reasonable chance of appointment. For most, the TWE provides closure and allows them to move on with their plans, but every year there are a few mistakes in this balancing act and candidates that received a TWE get appointed.

My son was 3Q until May 2nd. Then his portal changed to waitlist. No TWE as of today. He has already accepted plan B and AROTC scholarship. But the longer this takes the more plan B becomes plan A

Is the wait list status change your son received in the form of a letter from his RC under the official correspondence area on the portal?

Yes. That's exactly what it is. A PDF of a letter telling him he is on the waitlist.
What region are you in? We are Great Lakes. My son got his 3Q letter from his RC on 4-20, but no wait list status change. His RC emailed him last week saying he will likely be a QNS candidate this year, but no TWE yet.

@MichUSNA2021hopefulparent I am waiting for great news for your son! I hope they don't wait to the day before RDay and then you all are driving across country...west Point or bust!

If your DS or DD is waitlisted, what does his or her portal look like?? My DS was 3Q back in early March, but we haven't seen any updates to his portal since.

I believe it still looks the same as before, but in the correspondence section there is a PDF of a letter telling him he is waitlisted. I really don't know if any of the rest of the page is different. He had 4 portals going, and I saw them only a few times. He kept on them and showed me when there was a change.

So true. My DS received a TWE on 17 APR 17, accepted his AFROTC scholarship on 22 APR 17, only to receive an appointment to the USAFA on 26 APR 17. I know of 8 others who had the same thing. Hang in there and best of luck to those still waiting. I'm sure the USMA has similar occurrences.

Those who are 3Q with a NOM can be added to the "National Pool/National Wait list" during the application process which is completely different from being "waitlisted" that happens toward the end of the process when a SA believes that might need to offer a few more appointments based on turndowns in order to fill the class. There two different things often confused on here. In some years, an SA may not have any waitlist, but there will always be a National Pool.

TWE is generally given when an applicant is no longer being considered for an appointment. Based on what others have recently indicated on here, there apparently can be rare cases where someone gets offered an appointment after getting a TWE, but that has nothing to do with being waitlisted.

The hard part is not knowing. We all thought we would of known one way or another. My DS already has his back up plan in place. He was offered a spot @ MMI's Service Academy Program. We're visiting the campus next week.
