Are the qualifying vision requirements for pilots for Air Force (USAFA) different from AFROTC?
Was wondering if these websites need updating or if so, where to find the current standards (I have searched unsuccessfully.)

From AirForce.com:
"Pilots must have normal color vision, near visual acuity of 20/30 without correction, distance visual acuity of no worse than 20/70 in each eye correctable to 20/20 and meet other refraction, accommodation and astigmatism requirements. "

From AFROTC.com:
"PILOT & COMBAT SYSTEMS OFFICER
  1. Normal color vision
  2. Uncorrected distant vision cannot exceed 20/200
  3. Uncorrected near vision cannot exceed 20/40
  4. Both distance and near vision must correct to 20/20 or better
  5. Corrective eye surgery could be a disqualifier
  6. Meet refraction, accommodation, and astigmatism requirements"

Note the real difference. AirForce.com states PILOT. AFROTC.com states PILOT AND COMBAT SYSTEM OFFICER. CSO's are allowed a lower level for vision.

As a cadet in AFROTC you will meet what is called a RATED board. Rated positions are pilots, CSO, RPA pilots and ABM. All of them have different levels for vision. You rank from high to low your desires. Yet, at the end the AF will make the decision.

The fact is that pilots must pass the FAA FC1 physical. Thus, those standards are set by not only the AF, but the FAA for pilots.
As an AFROTC cadet if selected for pilot they will send you to Wright Pat for a 3 day flight physical. Vision is just one of the exams you will be given. They will basically exam every inch of your body from the top of your cranium to the soles of your feet. It is nothing like the DoDMERB exam.

One thing to realize is that if you need corrective eye surgery as a USAFA cadet the AF will pay for it, AFROTC cadets must pay for it on their own dime.

Thank you Pima!
Just one more question to clarify, please.
When you say "if selected for pilot they will send you....for a....physical," are cadets selected preliminarily based on their original DoDMERB exam, or are they selected based on aptitude tests, (without regard to physical requirements) and then given a medical exam to confirm they meet physical requirements?
IOW, can a cadet be DQ'd based on the DoDMERB exam and therefore never be considered for pilot based solely on that exam? Because if DoDMERB was done as a senior in high school, naturally, a few years later height measurements and vision may have changed (for the better).

Thus, those standards are set by not only the AF, but the FAA for pilots
Maybe the FAA has special requirements for AF pilots, but the civilian medical test for air line pilots pilots who want to receive their Class 1 Medical certificate is basically peeing into a cup, making sure your blood pressure is normal and testing that your vision is 20/20 with classes. The whole thing takes like 30 minutes max. My son did it twice. The AF FC1 physical runs 2-3 days.
