Digital Note Taking

I totally agree with you about handwritten notes. There’s something special about putting pen to paper that really helps with retaining information. Additionally, when you revisit and rewrite the material later to connect the ideas, the process becomes even more effective.

Is there a certain kind of iPad that is more useful? My son has a mini iPad for flight, but I imagine a regular sized iPad would be more useful for note taking. Also curious about wi-fi options for personal devices. I don't quite understand how that works. Can someone share there wisdom here?

A lot of people use iPad minis. No need to get cellular enabled imo.

It’s a personal choice, however, the vast majority of applications store things in the cloud, so unless you are doing video editing 256gb is likely more than sufficient. I have just the base model I pad and pencil and that’s been fine for me.

For iPad, any specific recommendations for note taking apps? A lot of available options, but would be curious if there are a few that rise to the top.

Do you think a full size iPad would work better than a mini?

It depends what your personal preference is. If I were advising you, I would say wait until you identify that you need it(, you will have the skills to either ask someone else to pick it up for you or have it delivered same day. I personally use one note for note taking as it’s free, though some folks swear by good note.

Is 256gb enough or should I get 512gb for the ipad?
I have taken notes for ~6 classes a semester for the last 2 years and have only used <5gb. I use notability, which also allows you to back up your notes to a cloud service such as onedrive. I think it has a fee each year, but its not too expensive and I like it a lot.

My DD has the standard iPad Pro with Pencil and it's been great during her three years at CGA. But she was an iPad kid from high school so the habits were burned in deeply already.

I think one more difference between tablet and notebook is the noise. You can only make a keyboard so quite, and it's hard to make a stylus very loud. But the transcription effect, typing fast enough to keep up with words but not leave room for processing, that's very real.
