Dining in

Doesn't the AF mess dress come with a golf shoes and bag?

The before 6PM dress mess does come with those accouterments. After 6PM they are verboten.

Funny you all are mentioning "unusual" accrouments worn by the AF with their Mess Dress.

In most of the Fighter Units I was in, at least half the guys wore "Party Shirts" instead of the standard Dress White Tux shirt.

And what is a "Party Shirt", you may ask? Simple. Since only the front of the shirt and the sleeve cuffs are visible while you are wearing your Mess Dress coat, many of the guys would go to a local tailor to have the sleeves and back of the shirt replaced with fabric in something a bit more "colorful and unusual". So, during the "fromal" part of the Dining In / Dining Out, you fit right in and look to be in regs. After the Smoiking Lamp is lit and the festivities commence it is acceptable to remove your Mess Dress coat, and THAt is when you get to proudly display your party shirt.

A tradition that started in Korea or the Phillipines, I think.

Examples of what I am talking about are here

BTW, since your DS's/DD's units tend to view the Dining Ins / Outs as opportunities to teach appropriate customs and courtesies, they tend to
"frown upon" any of the cadets wearing "non standard" uniform items. Tell them to save it until they go active duty in the AF.

2nd BTW, we're talking about getting a bunch of these for the groom, groomsmen, myself and the future in-law for our DS's Wedding next year. HAven't settled yet on the "color scheme".

Bullet,

These are hilarious!!! Absolutely LOVE THEM!!! What an interesting way to show some originality and yet still be formal when called for.:thumb:

No doubt they will match the bridesmaids gowns!

Actually our future daughter in law is a HUGE Batman fanatic. I believe our DS is opting for a Batman pattern to surprise her at the reception. As in the case for most grooms, he doesn't care about too much when it comes to wedding planning, but this he cares about because he will have it for a long time, thus the bride has no voice in this decision. or so he believes right now as a man that is only engaged!:shake:

If they matched the bridesmaid's dresses it would be incredibly boring. She was an AF brat like our DS, and she is marrying an AF officer. Want to guess the colors of the dresses? Navy blue(bridesmaids) and silver(flower girl)!:shake:

To add onto Bullet's comment about the tacky shirts. It is funny because when the night starts all the women are talking about are the dresses. When the guys take off their jackets all they talk about is did you see XYZ's shirt? That than rolls into...yeah, did you hear the story behind why he chose that pattern, it's hysterical?

Whoever said all women only talk about is what the other women were wearing never went to a Dining Out!

Come next June when we get the wedding pics back, I am sure Bullet will replace his avatar with a pic of him and our DS in their wacky tacky shirts.

I'm sure your future daughter-in-law will train DS quickly! Especially as he has already demonstrated that he is trainable. In the meantime I'm looking forward to the pics!

Thanks for the link, Bullet! I've saved the website to my favorites so that when the day comes, my DS can get a shirt.

Let's not forget the person who has the hardest job at any Dining In/Dining Out; Mr Vice. A job that I have had to perform in the past. One Dining Out was held during a period that we were turning over Executive Officers, so I referred to them as XO and Ex-XO; then to the room's delight I told everyone it would be easier if to just call them "Hugs" and "Kisses". The incoming Executive Officer was known as Kisses for their entire tour of duty.
