Yesterday my daughter received an email directly from the Director of Military Studies yesterday, "I recently have been given approval authority to offer a four year scholarship to those students still interested in it. I know you have been accepted to XXXXX University and the school is your first choice. I would like to extend a four year scholarship to you if you want it? I ask that you please write me back and let me know your decision!"

Not really sure what to think about this and if we should really starting to think about making new plans for school.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? Late notification? Direct contact from the ROTC staff at the school? Nothing official from Department of Army?

Was your daughter a USMA candidate?

The reason I ask is my son was told by his plan B school that there would be scholarships offered to highly competitive non selected by USMA candidates. He was unable to complete his app for ROTC due to shoulder surgery and not being able to complete the PFT. He passed the CFA at USMA during SLE but tore his labrum at the leadership reaction course a few days later.

**Please don't think this means that she is not selected by USMA if she is a candidate still. I intend no anxiety by sharing what was told to my son.**

Yes, she was a candidate for USMA. We did not receive any congressional nominations and then moved onto other plans. The school that just reached out was out of our comfort zone because of the cost but this notice sort of changes things.

Son was in a similar spot because of not being able to complete his PFT. Sounds like a promising plan! Is she accepted to the school? The May 1 deadline is looming so they may be trying to finalize units.

Son was appointed to USMA but was solidly hoping for a ROTC scholarship if not appointed.

Yes, she is accepted and the school was her #2 behind USMA and now having been offered a spot on their swimming team and attending the prospective students weekend she is quite excited.

Congratulations! That is amazing!

My #3 son is a swimmer. He just loves the sport and it is calming after the football season! Ha!

We had this happen to my DD last year but the communication came directly from Cadet Command and the Department of the Army. I actually called the ROO at the college she had picked as Plan B and he told me that while this does happen, he cannot see the information. I know that students should do most of the work, but I might pick up the phone on this one.

I'd pick up the phone and call. I would also try to set up an "immediate" face to face meeting at the school (I assume he's the Director of Military Studies at the college).

Was it from Army ROTC? If so, certain STEM schools have been given a campus based 4 year scholarship to award to the candidate of their choosing. My battalion has been given two of these scholarships. One for Union College and one for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

This happened to my son 5 years ago. He didn't receive a national scholarship but was contacted directly by Boise State and offered a 4 year scholarship.

Yes, Army ROTC. DD was a USMA candidate, AROTC applicant, accepted to Emory University in Atlanta, coming out of the Commonwealth Governor's School STEM program in Virginia. She had made her choice to a small liberal arts school for pre-med work but was contacted by the Cadet Commander at GA Tech (has responsibility for Emory University as well) yesterday. We have a conference call set up with them tomorrow and should get some answers then. I will report back here after the call.

Thanks to all for the prompt responses!

OK, here is the scoop. My DD applied and completed the West Point application, completed the AROTC application but never took the PRT. At the end of the ROTC process there are apparently a handful of scholarships that don't get used and they send those scholarships directly to units that serve really good STEM universities for direct offers. The head of the AROTC unit in Atlanta got a few of these, found DD's West Point and AROTC applications and made a direct ask. Didn't see this coming... Thanks Santa Claus! Thanks to @MohawkArmyROTC, @Love4monsters, and @kinnem for your input. This Marine is proud to say his DD is going to head to Emory University, swim on their national championship team, and serve her nation in the Army! What a great way to start the weekend!

Love these kind of beginnings! Super happy for your daughter and family. Looking forward to our children serving their country together in the United States Army.
