My question is regarding the Disabled Veterans Nomination. My father contracted a form of cancer when he served in the Navy (11 years) and it was proven to be service connected. He was considered 100% disabled during this time but he is no longer considered 100% disabled, so my question is, does the applicants parent have to be currently 100% disabled or could have been that it was in the past, as long as they were at least once able to fall under that category. I realize this is a unique case but I have looked everywhere and cannot find an answer or anyone to ask about this.

Honestly, I would just send in the required documents (DD214 & VA info) along with the nomination request form and see where that gets you. Your ALO is also a handy resource for unique situations, If he doesn’t know the answer, he knows someone that does.

Here are a couple of links from the USAFA website that might be helpful:

Thank you so much!!

According to 10 USC , the 100% percent rating must be confirmed by the VA, it is specifically stated (the veteran must be rated as 100% resulting from wounds or injuries incurrent in service by the DVA). This includes 100% Statutory, and 100% Unemployable, and possibly 100% Temporary as long as the temporary dates are inclusive of your application. Nothing to say, your dad was not 100% on the date of your submission, and that would appear to satisfy the requirements, but the dates much be inclusive.

Your Dad should be able to log into MyVA and download his current disability status document . There are various types of permanent and temporary disability, too detailed to go into here, but the info is on va.gov.
