Disband the Marine Corps?

You and MemberLG both are right and I know this but I've heard it go right down the middle on 2nd LT preformance going out of the service acadmies. But I think we are getting off topic here, what do you guys think of starting a new fourm questioning this

article http://ricks.foreignpolicy.com/post..._it_is_failing_to_prepare_tomorrow_s_officers

Look at the comments of that article. Col Meese (the social sciences department head at USMA) responded to the article in the form of a comment. He thoroughly discredited many of the claims in the article and effectively won any debate on the topic.

I don't think you fully understood what was going on if you think there is a real answer to this question, although Col Meese did make some very good points and I'll definitely be exited to meet him, there isn't a single answer to this question.

Look at the stand point of each of these people and read more into it, then tell me what you think.

Keep in mind when reading how deeply trenched into tradition West Point is and how hard it is for the military in general to change and then think about how enlisted personal view West Point graduates. Lots of great leaders come from West Point but also there is a lot of dissatisfaction, maybe that is part of Maj. Fernando Lujan hidden message? Although I would love to think that West Point is perfect, truth is there isn't such thing. I haven't really that much analysis on what either one wrote although and haven't looked into the facts so ill get back to you.

And I wouldn't advise either of you to state "facts" until you have been cadets, interacted with the enlisted, been there and done that, and THEN made a judgement. I don't trust hearsay, neither should you.

You'd have a much easier time getting rid of the Coast Guard. The USMC has image management down to a science. The Marines are far too entrenched in the lore and psyche of the American peoples' concept of our military to ever seriously worry about being deactivated.

That is certainly true. Many have no idea what the Coast Guard does. Also, USCG doesn't have the same level of love from that protective defense contractor blanket. It would be a battle in the House and Senate, as the argument would focus on domestic USCG missions, and would ask voters how they would feel if the called for help on Ch. 6 of the VHF radios (international hailing and distress) and no one answered.

This.

Like I've said...it's amazing we even have service academies and ROTC, since so many high school kids know how it all works on their own.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Now...I feel the need to have a good hearted, just for fun, Rant..

Why such little love for the Coast Guard.

The CG still has one of the hardest Basic's second only to the Marine Corps. Who do you think drags those drunken Navy boys out of the water when they fall off thier ships when they're in port. You Army and Marine boys think your so good with your rifles..well..try shooting the outboard engine from the open door of a helicopter at 1200 feet at a go fast boat that's speeding at 50 knots over 4 foot seas....at night...try and make that shot once. And the Air Force, well you guys can't complain because your uniforms look just as goofey as ours.

Now please take this with the obvious humor in which I intended.

I agree with Bullet, the military as a whole will be going through some serious changes over the next decade, best done by the boys in the puzzel. No matter how many times I went there I still got lost, I think some of my friends are still trying to find there way out. They did have good hot dogs at Ground Zero, you just had to find it first.

For all you young men and women, this will be an interesting time to be in the military, you will be at the forefront of changes that will shape it's future. Don't be to quick to change the world or think you have it all figured out, just when you do it jumps up and slaps you in the face.

As you can probably tell I'm an old Coastie, I also have an older son in AROTC and a younger son who just received his AROTC scholarhip this year....and I could't be more proud.
