Dismal BB throw during CFA at SLE

@Sam2018 For future reference how did DS send scores from one academy to the other? Was it as simple as an email to admissions? Our DS is at SLE and going to NASS in a couple weeks. So I assume he will need to send the best score to the other academy and to USAFA as well.

If memory serves he emailed his admissions counselor at USNA and asked for them to be forwarded. It was pretty simple I think and I imagine fairly common.

I think WP will default to the scores taken at SLE and Navy will default to NASS but you can have the better scores forwarded. Two years ago when DS's scores were better at NASS it was no problem to send those scores to WP and USAFA. It is nice to have one thing done and out of the way. FYI, the scores from USAFA SS are not considered official and will not count. But that's usually good because most do not do great on that test due to the altitude.
Looks like you are back on the roller coaster with DS2.

Yup :) Here we go again :)

So maybe practicing w a well worn, slick basketball would be a good idea? Just curious before I go digging around places in the garage lol

The basketball throw is a useless tool in determining either fitness or ability.

The military isnt shy about change, so why not scrap this albatross and find another skill more commensurate with military success?

Never could understand the 1 1/2 mile run either, especially for Navy and Coasties. After all, the longest ship they have is around a thousand feet long and most work somewhere between either end. Worse case is 1000', best is 500' that they would have to run before they're out of deck and into a whole new athletic requirement. [emoji23] Never heard of anyone having to throw basketballs at an enemy either.

While I won't defend the basketball throw as a proxy for military success, perhaps it can be better viewed as a problem-solving challenge which, of course, plausibly resides at the core of many military tasks.

Raspberries.

Son texted me that he struggled with the BB Throw at SLE this morning. He did okay practicing at home, then got to the SLE this morning an only threw around 38-40 ft. He said he was above average in everything else.

Will he have the opportunity to redo the CFA? :(

Yes he will. Tell your son not to worry so much about the throw. He needs to practice a technique that works for him. It's not about how strong you are although that can help. Here are some videos that are helpful to improve his skill. Sling throw.

My DS is also at SLE this week. His CFA scores were above the avgs. He will go to NASS session #3 in a couple weeks. If he takes the CFA and doesn't do as well are you stuck with your NASS score? Or are you able to submit you best sitting?

I feel I read on the forum that if you retake the CFA, your scores improved or not are now your scores.

No, I thought this too, but during SLE, we had a Q&A session with the lieutenant colonel who was part of the admissions team, and he said they take the best CFA. However, they do not "superscore" the individual aspects of the CFA.

Just an FYI...

I was at the admissions/parents panel at NASS for session 2 this past Saturday. A question was asked about sending and/or taking CFA scores from other academies. They said that in the past USAFA, USMA, and USNA would all send, receive, and accept scores from the other SA's. They said that for the class of 2023 this has CHANGED. We were told by a USNA Admissions Officer that the USMA will no longer accept CFA scores done at NASS. The USNA will however accept scores from the USMA SLE and send/receive scores from the USAFA.

The question was asked a second time for clarification as this was new and I and many others had never heard this before. I would suggest to check with WP to verify before trying to send scores from NASS.

Well that's a bummer. DS did not do as well on the CFA at WP this week as he did last week at NASS. He was planning on sending on the scores from NASS to both WP and USAFA. At least he can still send to USAFA. Two years ago, class of 2021, WP started requesting video proof of certain parts of the CFA from some candidates. Even from those that took the CFA at SLE. I think they were getting some showing up for beast totally unprepared. I wonder if this is related.

That would be my guess too. USMA is the only one that requires videos of the push-ups and pull-ups.

My DS took the CFA at NASS section 1. During the admissions meeting this past Saturday at WP for SLE section 2, I asked if they would accept scores from the CFA at NASS and they said they will but the cadet candidate would be required to submit video proof of push ups and pull ups.

Only if the candidate did better at NASS than he/she did at SLE and only if the candidate want to use the scores from NASS instead of the scores from SLE.

Yes... before Friday. He can do it again outside WP too but will submit video instead.

I was at parents briefing to both Navy and West Point. Navy will accept n send CFA result. WP will NOT and if you fail CFA at WP you can take it outside WP but you’ll send a video.
