I am currently working on the first stages of my application. My guidance counselor at my high school recommended I reach out to a diversity outreach officer (I am biracial) and I had no idea what that was. I looked into it and still don't really see what they are or the benefit of contacting one. Can anyone shed some light on what they are?

Why not contact one and get the info from the primary source? Then you can decide what to think about it.

Each region has a Diversity Outreach Officer. That is the person you should contact in your region for the the most accurate information.

Status as a diversity candidate provides significant advantages in admission, especially in the chances of appointment as an Additional Appointee (AA). While all appointees must meet be 3Q, Additional Appointees may be appointed out of order of merit. This is the category used to appoint candidates that USMA wants, but who did not win appointment in other categories. Most of these are recruited athletes and diversity candidates.

So I would have a better chance of admission if I am 3Q simply because of my race? I am not really sure how I feel about that. On one hand I want to get in any way I can but something about being possibly unqualified and still getting in doesn't seem right.

You will not get in if you aren’t qualified.

You need to be qualified medically, academically, and physically. Like everyone else offered an appointment.

The Diversity Officer will be able to answer your questions & address any concerns but only if you reach to them.
Good Luck!
