Do all 10 kids on the slate need to be 3Q before appointments made?

My DD has an LOA and 2 MOC noms. TBH having the LOA has made the tedious work of jumping through the AMI hoops more bearable....knowing that as she works through the process there is an appointment around the corner helps her stay the path.

Agree, it was the same process today, but all done via mail. You were oblivious to everything going on except when someone called or sent a letter. This process is very long and complicated and although the initial answer is a yes/no in many cases the process flow to all those is crazy long on all the scenarios. Bottom line for those with an LOA... complete all the items and it will happen. If one of those items is a medical waiver... well there is less control on that one. It’s a sit and wait unless more info is requested. Waivers can go quick or take a long time to process. Sometimes it’s a matter of clarifying info, or waiting for a timeframe to pass (such as x amount of days lost surgery), or even USNA only likes to waive X amount with that condition. It’s a busy season in admissions right now. They have NASS apps now on top of 2023 admissions. Things don’t happen over night in most cases. Take a deep breathe and try to enjoy your senior year.
And if you don't win the slate? What do your options look like from there?

If you don’t win your slate you go to the National Pool. You must have a nom to move here. USNA will appoint the top 150 by WCS off this list. After that USNA can appoint anyone off this list to round out a class how they wish and how many slots they have left.

So if you get a 3Q’d letter are you in the national pool of 150 or is it a separate national pool until all the nominations come in? My last senator hasn’t even announced his slat yet so you can’t possibly have a winner yet.

There is only one National Pool but it is used in different ways; picture it as a holding pen where candidates sit from the time they are qualified to the time when slates are resolved and offers are released. All candidates that are 3Q are placed in the pool. As slates start shaping up and offers are issued they are pulled from the pool. Once all slates have been resolved, the next 150 or so are pulled from the pool. After that, admissions will pull others from the pool to meet the academy's needs, ie diversity candidates, recruited athletes, LOA holders, foundation scholars who were not high enough on their nomination slate. At the end of the process, there will be some number of applicants in the pool who do not have a spot to be charged and will receive a TWE. These are the logical steps but they are all happening in parallel so each step does not have to be complete before the next one is started.

USNA does not issue 3Q letters, USMA does. The National Pool would only have 3Q candidates though. Those that are not 3Q won’t make it to the National Pool.

I suspect this is "busy season" for admissions. And the LOA being the receipt of a nomination puts your DS right into the busiest time. So I bet you receive good news any day now! Another thing is that USNA typically notifies the MOC about a week before they roll over in the portal. Some MOC's notify their candidates, some don't (ours didn't...). So one could have the offer without knowing it yet for a time. I'm watching for 'ya!!
You are definitely a good luck charm! My wife and I received a phone call this morning to report to the HS guidance dept if at all possible for a 'meeting.' We were all in the conference room to hear our son receive his appointment offer by our congressman. It's a great day!

WONDERFUL!! So excited for you. And that is truly a grand way to get the news. I cannot imagine what must have been going through your minds! Hearing stories like this is so neat. Our finding out was quite uneventful. Pretty much accidental. DS had emailed a staffer (can't recall why) and she referred to his offer quite casually as if he already knew. No bells or whistles or anything. And after that whole year plus long process? IG we thought confetti would magically fall from the clouds or something. Very exciting times for your family lie ahead! It is nice to be able to 'relax' a bit and just enjoy senior year!

Add him to the DIY appointment list, and join the usna parent facebook group once he receives his appointment letter (if he accepts). That is a lot of fun. CONGRATS again!

My son approached us when we were on the couch watching a hockey game. We asked him how his day was, and he told us what he did that day in school, what he had for lunch, what tests he had coming up, etc. and started to walk back to his room. That's when he pulled a "Columbo" on us and came back to say; "Oh yeah, I received my Offer of Appointment to the Naval Academy today, too".

<PAUSE HOCKEY GAME> "Wait a minute, WHAT??????"

He learned this sort of dead-pan sense of humor from me, so I couldn't be mad at him. We all had a good laugh. ;)

so what happens if only 1 person from a congressional district applies? if they need no waiver and CFA/grades are decent then they are automatically in?

If they are 3Q that one person will get an appointment 99.9% of the time.

Congratulations!!! Great news indeed...

That would be a very exciting and memorable way of getting the good news! Watch your step as you walk on the clouds today.

Can someone explain how the slates work? Does each state have a slate? Or several? How many are on a slate? Thank you.

So if one kid from your slate is offered an appointment, does that mean that no one else on that slate is eligible? That is how my BGO made it sound.

If their only nomination source was from that slate then that person won the slate. That doesn’t mean no one else can get accepted because the academy can do some shuffling

If one kid is charged to the slate, your son is no longer eligible to be charged to that slate. He goes in the National Pool where he may get selected as the first 150 qualified alternates or in the last group of additional appointees.

Ok so since I have 2 noms, (Senate and AJROTC), and my congressional nom has a slate winner, I am still eligible?

Just heads up I am the candidate myself, not a parent.

Yes. For all you know the person who “won” the slate was actually charged to another nomination source and you could be picked from the congressman’s slate
