Do I have a chance at getting appointed?

Hello all,

I am currently a junior at a Jewish Day school in New York City. Throughout high school, I have mostly been a B student. I am currently taking an English honors class and I am also in the Science Research Initiative. I am currently a student pilot as well. I will be taking the ACT in April and I am currently scoring around a 28's on my practice tests. In terms of sports I have played Varsity Tennis for 9th, and 10th grade and will be playing this year as well. I did play JV basketball for 9th and 10th grade. I am the vice president of the chess club. I am really interested in applying to USAFA because the possibility of serving my country, being around something I love (aviation) while receiving an amazing education seems like an amazing experience. I also have applied to the summer seminar. Many of you on this site are very knowledgeable and I was wondering if I could stand a chance at getting appointed. Any response is greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Disclaimer: no one on these forums can really "chance" you. We can't plug numbers into a formula and say, "You have a 92% chance of getting in." However, we can offer advice and help you build a stronger application! :)

Just my $0.02, I would work harder to get your GPA up. If you say you've been mostly a B student, try to get the rest of your grades up to an A and boost your GPA. Higher GPA = higher class rank = SAs looking favorably on you. In other words, SAs like candidates who rank high in their class. According to Academyadmissions, over half (52%) of the incoming class ranked in the top 10% of their schools. I do not know your class rank so that's just me assuming and you know what they say about assuming :shake:

Seek leadership roles in tennis as well as other groups that interest you. Are you involved with Scouts? Civil Air Patrol? JROTC? NHS? Seek leadership roles in organizations that interest you; the SAs really want a candidate to hold quality leadership positions. (SAs prefer quality over quantity). You said you were interested in aviation, may I suggest joining the Civil Air Patrol? You can look them up on Google. In general, they're the Air Force's auxiliary and have a strong emphasis on aviation.

Like I said, that's just my $0.02. There are other way more experienced people on these forums, I just wanted to offer my thoughts and my insight on your application. That being said, if you have any questions, feel free to ask anyone on these forums; these people are some of the friendliest and helpful people you'll meet! :)

Dear CherokeeBC2016,

Thank you for your response! I forgot to mention that my school doesn't really calculate GPA or class rank. I have looked into JROTC and there are no options available nearby to me unfortunately. I haven't really looked into CAP but I definitely will.

No one here that posts, is on the Admissions staff. So, to tell you that, "No, you don't have a prayer or Yes, you have a good shot," it just an opinion. Sure you may have low test scores and/or GPA but that is a factor that goes into WCS. I don't know if you took last ACT/SAT. Since SA's superscore, take both tests and see which one you score better one and concentrate on that particular test. Also go to http://www.jrotccollegeprep.com.

You have several options, should you not be offered an appointment. Re-apply, hope that you may be offered a Foundations Scholarship/Prep School. This is why you read from so many people, to have multiple back up plans... Most of the information that you are requesting is found on several "stickies" or can be found by using the search function.

The fact that you found this site, is good as you can use the information found here to help better you applications and your plan B-I or what not. Good luck with your application to the SA's as you still have time to improve it and hone it as your competition is doing the same at this stage.

Take a look at the hundreds of "Chance Me" posts here and then at the stats of those who were appointed. Rack & Stack - see where you fit.

Look through this site with a fine tooth comb and you will find the answers to many of your and your parents' questions.

Good luck!
