Hello, I am a junior in high school and I was wondering what my chances were of being accepted into West Point. I am concerned because I have a low unweighted gpa of about 3.3. However, I have taken all AP classes throughout high school, with mostly B’s and several A’s. I have a 32 on the ACT; I have been in cross country throughout all of high school, with one varsity letter; I’ve also been in one year of track and one year of powerlifting. I’m the head drum major of my band which consists of about 130 people, and I’ve been a section leader of about twenty people the last three years of band. I am going to boys state this summer, and I have a total of about 1000 volunteer hours at a military-catering Christian camp for military personnel in Colorado (Spring Canyon) where I worked for two months. I have also participated in math club for three years, Young Voters Committee for two years, Scholars Bowl for two years, and French club for two years. I also have an older sibling who graduated from West Point and another one who is currently attending, if that makes any difference. Are my chances very good, if at all?

Sounds like a good candidate to me. Just keep doing your best academically to get as high as you can.

+1 to SAorBUST. Remember it's a competition, and in fact a competition where you can't see what your competitors are doing so be sure you're giving it every effort.

Your class rank and school profile is much more important than just your reported GPA. A 3.3 taking a rigorous college prep course load with numerous AP STEM classes and being in the top 10-15% of your class is much different than a 3.3 in the non-advanced type classes that are not Stem based and a top 30% class rank. During your interview with your FFR, you would talk about the leadership required to be a head drum major.

I'll say you should have a really good plan B in mind, that 3.3 is going to be an issue but eye on the prize and keep fighting.

If service and military life style are your driving factors I'd say your chances for ROTC 4 year are excellent - you could take that to one of the Senior Military Colleges VMI, Citadel, University of North Georgia ... - all great schools with unique history and traditions, all producing fine officers.

If marching band is your THING the Citadel sends the Regimental Band and Pipes to Scotland for the Tattoo every few year and there is of course the Texas Fighting Aggie Band at Tx A&M

You have just a good a shot then any! My DS was rejected from USNA after high school, this was the one and only school he wanted to go to and applied to! His GPA was a cumulative 3.3 SAT 1240, decent CFA score and lettered in 1 sport, received nom. His high school counselor told him to give up because he wouldn’t make it! This being said he decided to try again! Went to a prep school without a scholarship and put his whole heart into it, improving SAT, CFA and ACT. This is where he decided to apply for USMA and decided this was a better fit. He received his BFE January 25 and has just completed his plebe year and loves it there!
So with all that being said, if this is what you truly want work hard and doing the best you can! Good luck to you!
