Hi, I'm a high school junior, would be class of 26 at Kings Point. Up until these past couple months I really had no plan for college until I learned about KP. As a result of that, I'm off to a bit of a late start in terms of putting together an impressive college app portfolio. As of now, this is what my portfolio is looking like:

- 3.38 GPA unweighted, 3.81 GPA weighted
- ACT 32
- SAT 1340
- 2 years lacrosse 1 year varsity (but left this year and am going to start sailing instead)
- Florida Boys State
- Volunteering (aiming to hit at least 100 hours for Florida Bright Futures scholarship in case I end up going to college here)
- Class rank 124/467

Next year I plan to take part in Key Club perhaps, and maybe get a job. I also haven't taken Pre-Calc or Physics yet (I took Chemistry) but I am taking those next year. I also am going to dual enroll my English and take ENC1101 at my local community college. Other than that I'm not sure what else I can do to increase my odds of getting in, other than maybe bring up my test scores but I feel like I did pretty good on those. I've researched the daylights out of KP and have truly set my sights on it, I'm going to start my application on May 1st and have planned to meet every requirement (medical, congressional nomination, etc). Those who can provide insight, what are my odds? What more should I do to increase my chances of getting in? What criteria are most important to KP?

won't know until you try

so is your goal to become a professional merchant mariner?

Looks good except LEADERSHIP. Where have you demonstrated leadership and how has your leadership made a difference in your school, community, church, etc?

+1 With this, have you had any leadership in the volunteer hours? I found my interviewers were more interested when I helped plan and lead an event verse just particpation

I guess as of now I don't really have any experience where I really demonstrated leadership and made a difference. Perhaps at Boys State this summer I will have an opportunity to do such. Or maybe even at Salvation Army where I volunteer. Thanks!

I third this. Your ACT/SAT scores look good, try and find a way to bring up your overall GPA though, such as taking courses you didn't do so well online over the summer. This will also help bring up your overall class rank.

It's been harder to find leadership opportunities during Covid. My DS in high school (not interested in SA) has been creative. He found some community organizations who needed help and were willing to let him take the lead on the some projects. For example, he worked with a group who does outreach to the elderly and did a food collection drive over the holidays for some of the elderly folks who are on fixed incomes. One of his friends just did a board game collection for a retirement home. My son also led a clean up for a local park. If you look around, I bet you can find opportunities.

Take a look at the Travis Manion Foundation www.travismanion.org. They have a program called Operation Legacy, where you can lead a project in your community. I’ve been doing the 9/11 heroes run with this group for about 6 years. But it might be worth looking into. The Foundation supports veterans and families of the fallen. They have different leadership opportunities, take a look and see if it is of interest to you.

I’ll check it out, thanks so much!
