Do the SA’s know about appointments from other SA’s?

If you get an appointment from one SA, should you let the others know? Does this help or hurt your application?

No they don’t know. A BGO or ALO usually know because candidates tell them but it has no bearing on admissions to other SAs.

The other SAs do not automatically know when an appointment is offered by one SA. This is only if the recipient tells. Telling may not be a recommended thing to do. In my opinion, telling may only gives a qualified candidate more leverage if candidate is a highly sought after athletic recruit. Telling doesn't move a 3Q candidate up the slate in the normal process.

Agree. An appointment to another SA typically has no effect on whether you'll receive one to USNA. There are many cases of a candidate receiving an appointment from one SA and a TWE from another.

Sorry to take over the thread, but this makes it seem like there will be vacant spots in each of the service academies if there are individuals with multiple appointments. Does this mean that a candidate can get waitlisted and then offered an appointment?

Yes. The SAs offer more appointments than spots available. They do this knowing that some candidates who have been offered appointments will turn them down. This is what the SAs call yield rate. USNA has a target class size based upon congressional requirements, funding, needs of the Navy. USNA will offer x amount of spots over that target number based upon yield and then end up generally very close to that number. If for some reason their yield rate is higher than anticipated, USNA will not rescind appointments, the class will just be slightly larger. If that number is lower than expected, USNA can offer appointments to those on the waitlist. USNA usually offers around 50-100 waitlist spots each years. Most who are selected for this will know fairly late in the process around late March/early April. USNA encourages those on the waitlist to continue with Plan B options as very few come off the waitlist. In the last 5 years or so it’s been a handful or less who have made it off the list. Also, USNA will start to cut that list down and turn waitlist offers to TWEs as the class size settles. They will leave some on the waitlist even up to I Day as they can offer appointments until a day or two prior.

I don’t know this for fact, but I get the feeling that quite a few of the “Undecided” on the 2018 appointment thread are waiting to hear from their first choice SA. Just a hunch.

That is usually the case but some are also considering ROTC or other options. For some if they earn an ROTC scholarship to their first choice school some will go there too.

100% agree with this. I also think that a lot of folks like to have all their cards in hand before making a decision. IOW, they may be 90%+ certain they'll accept USNA but want to see what else comes their way. Some may also feel "duty-bound" to let other schools know they've accepted USNA and may not want to do that until they find out whether they've been accepted.

In recent years, USNA has had an extraordinarily high yield rate (approaching 90%). So, while it may look like lots of folks are on the fence, in the end (if recent past continues to hold), almost all will end up accepting. This is why, in recent years, the number coming off the WL has been very low or even zero.
