Hello, My son just broke his nose today small fracture with minimal deviation. Went to ENT who reccomends surgery. No airway obstruction but suggest surgery for no future issues. Getting ready to schedule DodMERB but not sure how long after surgery should he wait to schedule? They are reccomending closed reduction under anestesia? Will this be a problem to pass DoDMERB?

Try to schedule the medical exam at least six to eight weeks from now, to give your son the most time for an unrestricted recovery. That way you will set up your son for the best possible outcome.

Bring a letter with you to the DoDMERB appointment from the ENT confirming NO resrictions and FULL recovery.

Thank you! I appreciate the insight.

Just some advise from a parent who dealt with a waiver. Get the doctor to CLEARLY write that it will cause no restrictions in activity such as military training , sports etc...Also get copies of all x-ray reports, surgical reports because you will need to provide them to DoDMERB because they will fail him for having a CURRENT broken nose and offer him remedial which allows him to provide a follow-up post surgical reports before they will consider reversing the failure or sending to the service academy for a waiver. It is going to cause you a long drawn out headache but can be done, so don't give up and be mentally prepared for the long haul. My other suggestions is find a retired military doctor who is a ENT surgeon who still practices and get him/her to do surgery and write report if possible. They know the wording the military is looking for and can give a better duty status report that holds more weight with the waiver authority.

if he could call it something other than surgery might help.
typically there is a 6 month DQ for surgery.

Depending on the branch perhaps there is a chance they may waive it so long as the six months is up before Basic.

I would find a retired military physician as Motor guy stated. You can also reach out to Dr. Glenn Merchant of DoDMERB Consultants and get his opinion.

In my opinion, your best option is to do as AROTC-dad suggested, don't schedule DODMERB until after the 6-8 week full recovery period. Bring letter to DODMERB from Doc explaining full procedure and stating "full recovery with no restrictions to include any type of military service". The 6 months surgery time frame is from time of surgery to reporting for IDay, (not date of DODMERB), so if surgery is done soon, that should not be an issue. Your goal is to get DODMERB Doc to understand its not an issue, so no DQ and subsequent waiver or follow up is even required.

Thank you ..... his surgery is today and we will defiantly wait to have DoDMERB done along with proper documentation.
