So I am completely finished with my usna application, but I recently logged onto DoDMERB to check my medical status. It appears that I have a DQ under D227.60, which is "history of uncorrected herniated nucleus pulposus associated with any treatment, symptoms, or activity limitations." I had a bulging disc in my back a year and a half ago, but havent had any issues since. I guess my question is should I be concerned about this? I play football and baseball and havent had any significant issues, do you think that I can get a waiver for this or am I going to get disqualified?

No need to make two threads about the same thing.
USNA will begin the waiver process if they see fit.

It used to be that you could send an EMail to Larry Mullen (@MullenLE on these forums and the Deputy Director of DoDMERB)
and ask him how you should proceed. It would appear that after all these years, Mr. Mullen is still there (and probably as helpful as ever).

Paste your question in an email and include contact info and last 4 digits of your SSN.
Here is a link to his contact information

For a "what if" scenario, you may want to look up **LINK REMOVED**
and ask Dr./CAPT. Glenn Merchant who is a retired Director of DoDMERB.

Okay thank you so much

DS is in Remedial for AMI on a surgery he had at 6 years old. We found out today that his request for all his medical records was rejected because the hospital said they destroy records after 6 years! Now what?! He has an appointment with a specialist to report on his current condition. We have to hope this is enough?? He hasn’t had any issues since the surgery 11 years ago.

It's going to have to be enough. You can't provide DODMERB or the WA what no longer exists. Medical folks know that some records are not available after a certain amount of time, so I'm sure you're not the first one.

The current/updated info from the specialist is the only thing you can provide.

What was the surgery for?

He had a blood vessel removed from around his ureter.

Did it cause uteropelvic junction obstruction?

Should be a non-issue so long as your DS has normal urinary system function. The doctor will probably have to submit labs to prove it with normal kidney labs.

Also, the doctor’s note should clearly state the UPJ obstruction was only from a crossing blood vessel and not anything else like a tumor. The note should say, if true, no history of bladder or kidney infections since surgery.

Again, I’m just assuming this is for UPJ obstruction because blood vessels can cross the ureter causing blockage.

Yes! It caused an obstruction and that’s how it was found. He had robotic surgery to correct it and has been fine since. But he’s so nervous now.

I forgot to mention in my last message... how often does he require to be seen by a urologist or get labs to make sure his kidneys are still ok?

He hasn’t had to see his urologist since 2008. I found him though and made an appointment with him in October.

And his PCP does blood and urine every couple of years and has been fine.

You might want to get that statement from your hospital in writing and send it to DODMERB. I'm in that industry and hospitals are required to retain a child's medical record information for the "age of majority plus 10 years". That's until age 28 assuming your state considers an 18 year old an adult.

Six years means they lost it for other reasons, but they should never intentionally destroy the medical information.

Yes, I have the notice from the hospital that the records are no longer available. I will make sure I include that. He is going to a specialist and will go for ultrasound and blood/urine as well. We have to hope that is sufficient. Thanks!

I was just getting ready to post the same thing. You might ask them why they destroyed a minor's surgical record. It could be that they weren't paying attention to the fact he was a minor and those records might be kept separately.

I even called the specialist that performed the surgery and they no longer have it either. This nyc hospital inpatient rep told us it’s standard after 6 years. I called and emailed for verification following the letter they sent me. The private physician that performed it didn’t give a timeframe but made an appointment with him. He hasn’t been seen there since 2008. Argh.

Dr./CAPT. Glenn Merchant has scammed SEVERAL families with his $895/services. We have filed wire fraud with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
