All,

I have searched site and found many comments on on color blindness. I found out yesterday to my surprise and disappointment that I am color blind.

I know this is automatic DQ from some branches, but I hope this is not a show stopper for AROTC? The DO had me view six slides, of which I think two of my answers were correct - 33%. My interest is in computer science/cyber security and hope this will not kill my chance serve my country one day.

Anyone with recent color blindness experiences in AROTC?

Keeping my fingers crossed!

My DS 's first physical also diagnosed color blindness and problem with depth perception and we doubted both with is history of hand/eye coordination sports. Took him to a professional eye clinic for further in depth testing and came away with a completely different report stating there was no problem with either. Submitted that report and it was accepted

Get a second opinion from an opthamologist who has a military background.

Update - I checked website for status. I was concerned about color blindness for AROTC and fears were confirmed.

My status is: Code D156.10 - Color deficiency does note meet individual service standard.

Ouch, I never knew my condition until DoDMERB exam. For AROTC 2017 candidates, it might be wise to take a color test - about 8% males have this condition.

Best of luck to others in chasing the dream!

Waivers are possible and not uncommon for AROTC. My understanding is you still have a chance. If in the HS scholarship application process, the waiver is initiated automatically. If in the In College Scholarship process the waiver has to be requested by the ROTC BN or Detachment Commander.

If you just graduated HS, or about to graduate HS - for your peace of mind - contact your DoDMERB Technician and confirm when a waiver might be initiated or if a waiver might require other tests you could start now. https://dodmerb.tricare.osd.mil/Contacts.aspx

This might restrict you from aviation but many Army Officer positions don't have color vision requirements.
