Hello Everyone I am a Cadet at Det 085 Uc Berkeley and I have been a cadet for a year now. I’m a fit 18 year old and have never had any medical problems before and was performing well within my detachment. At the end of my first year as a AS100 before DodMerb exams for everyone I had a normal physical at kaiser where my doctor found a heart murmur. I went through a Echocardiogram and was diagnosed with Atrial Septal Defect a heart condition I was born with. Ive never had any symptoms or problems and I’m still currently physically active. My Doctors have given me the option of minimally invasive asd repair so we can fix it now before it causes problems in my late future. I told my cadre of my situation, and they have decided to extend my DodMerb to after my surgery. I was wondering if I will get DQ’d for this as ROTC is the most important thing in my life right now. Although I know this is a 100% DQ for pilot as my dream was to fly I still want to serve my country as my father did and his father. If anyone can help me or give me advice on the situation I would be very thankful.

Any specific reason why they would want to close it?

A small, hemodynamically insignificant ASD is not always closed.

Is the cardiologist concerned about embolism or did the echo show any of your heart chambers enlarged?

BTW, you may want to ask the moderators to remove your name from this public forum.

They believed the right side of my heart was enlarging. So they wanted to close the hole now. And thank you I will ask.

If you have a chamber that is enlarged, then maybe you have a hemodynamically significant ASD.

That could be one of the reasons your doctors offered to close your ASD.

Your dream to be a pilot is not over yet. Your condition is DQ but the USAF will consider waivers for pilot applicants who have a history of ASD treated with surgical closure.
