one of the questions asks, have you ever had skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis, hand or foot rashes, eczema, or dry skin.

I have had acne for awhile now, it's not bad, but I still have it. I answered yes to the question because I didn't want to lie on it...however my dad is trying to tell me that it could disqualify me. I don't have anything else, only acne.

Stick with the truth.

They only want to know if you had to take medication for it. So only if it is really bad acne as nearly everyone has or had acne.

Agree with Idzak. It's better to show up at the appointment and for them to say, "oh, it's no big deal" than for you to have a breakout the night before and them to ask, "why didn't you mark this down?" Usually, acne is not a big deal..but let DODMERB make that decision. Good luck.

Answer all DoDMERB questions truthfully, no more no less. Don't volunteer "extra background" info, because more times than not it only focuses more attention to something the examining physician would probably clear you on.

Yup. My DD had to respond yes. she had horrible acne and the doctor would have seen it anyway and wonder why she didn't say yes if she put no. They my wonder what else you're hiding! Actually, she took acutane for a short time. Made her feel sluggish so stopped but there's a chance she may be DQ'd for the drug since its a big gun. Still waiting.

Acne is a tough one. I have not meet a teenager that doesn't have it. I would only check yes, if a physician had diagnosed acne. If you self diagnose, just make sure you explain that it is typical adolescent acne, medical care was never needed and it was resolved with normal hygiene. My DS checked yes to acne and was qualified.

My DS was also on Accutane earlier this spring. He finished up the medication the end of April. He had been off of it for several months before going to the DODMERB exam. He said yes on the form and also brought a letter from the dermatologist stating when he started and ended the medication and that there were no side effects and that he was fit to serve. He was qualified with no questions asked.

My son was also on Accutane for 5 months however had been off of the medication for several months prior to his exam 2 weeks ago. I believe I read that they need to be off of it for 8 weeks prior to I Day....I could be wrong. With that being said, I wouldn't want my DS to be on it now during the application process, but it seems like there have been plenty of kids on this forum that have been treated for acne. My DS also had allergy shots when he was a child for seasonal allergies and has but has not taken any medication for over 5 years. Aside from that, a fractured foot when he was six from jumping off a slide... lol! They ask for everything and I always feel it's best to be honest. How long does it typically take for the DODMERB exam to be updated on your portal?

I'm currently taking an oral antibiotic for acne, anyone know if this could be a problem?

My daughter wears a knee brace when she runs...a high school track injury that never really healed...Without the brace, her knee cap slides while she runs. With the brace, she has no issues. She is thinking of applying to Officer Candidate School? Can she take the fitness test with the brace? Should she own up to it on the physical? No PT or knee doctor has found anything wrong..I guess it doesn't slide off during the doctor's appointment just during the track meet or marching band half time show.

I have my DODMERB tomorrow and am not sure what to expect, any advice would be greatly appreciated

It’s really just a general check up. Urine sample, doctor checks your balance, agility, etc.. you do a hearing test, they get your height and weight.. then the doctor asks you about any applicable boxes that you checked on your medical form. That’s it.

It's just a physical. Don't worry about it, turn your head to the left, and cough. :D

Alright thanks for the input, is the vision test with our without contacts?

Vision test is without contacts. Check your paperwork, because depending on the type of contacts you have to take them out so many days/weeks before the exam.

USAFA22, your oral antibiotics shouldn't be an issue, but it could depend on what antibiotic it is. My older son (USNA '14) was on doxycycline and it wasn't an issue. Just be thorough on explaining it on your paperwork.

I take topical antibiotics for acne (Clindamycin gel) would this affect me at all?

I can not answer your question directly but I can give you some direction so you can do some research.
Here is the medical standard http://www.esd.whs.mil/Portals/54/Documents/DD/issuances/dodi/613003p.pdf

For acne on page 36:
Current diseases of sebaceous glands including severe and or cystic acne (706), or hidradenitis suppurativa (704-705), if extensive involvement of the neck, scalp, axilla, groin, shoulders, chest, or back is present or shall be aggravated by or interfere with the proper wearing of military equipment. Applicants under treatment with systemic retinoids, including, but not limited to isotretinoin (Accutane®), do not meet the standard until 8 weeks after completion of therapy.

What I do not know is Clindamycin a retinoids. Also, you can see the standard above related to Acne.

so does my DS.
It was not a problem. Not even a remedial about it. they didn't care - that was 3 weeks ago. so recent.

This is a rather old thread but I had a question regarding acne so i will put it here instead of creating a new one. I have mild acne, nothing severe, but definetely still something and am currently taking clindamycin as well for it. I actually used it about half a year ago for a month and my acne got better so I stopped using it. However in the time frame i stopped using it, my acne didnt necessarily get worse, but it didnt really get much better either despite constantly washing my face and applying facial products. I went back on the treatment so that it would go away again recently. I can stop using the medication no problem, however i cant guarantee that it would quickly get better. Is this something that might raise a few flags for me?
