My DS has been notified that USAFA is requesting a waiver on his behalf. Who actually performs the waiver review? Someone at DODMERB, an AF physician at USAFA or someone else? I think we understand the process but just wanted to know where his files would now be heading.

All medical information will go to DoDMERB which is located at USAFA (for all services and ROTC). DoDMERB will then forward the info to the decision makers at the specific academy or ROTC program. That entity will then decide to waive or deny the candidate or request still more additional medical information (AMI).

This flow chart may help:

As you can see in the flow chart, it is favorable that USAFA initiated the waiver process as they only do so for "competitive" candidates.

Medical Waivers
There is no need for you to request a medical waiver. If you are competitive for an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy or one of our preparatory programs, we will automatically process a medical waiver for USAFA on your behalf.

You will be notified directly by DODMERB if there are any additional requirements, tests, or evaluations for the waiver process. DODMERB may request additional tests or evaluations to support your waiver. These may be obtained at a military facility at no cost to you or at a civilian facility at your cost. Please keep in mind that DODMERB is working on your and our behalf to acquire the medical waiver and that DODMERB is not the waiver authority.

The Academy Command Surgeon (not affiliated with DODMERB) may grant a limited number of medical waivers and they will notify you of the final waiver decision.

Thanks again AROTC-dad for your information. We just weren't sure where the waiver authority was coming from - DODMERB or the specific SA. Your explanation was exactly what we were looking for.

What about AFROTC at Purdue and needing a waiver to proceed and go to OTS training this summer? Will they process one as well? Or do we need school ROTC Officer to ask for it?? What other information can we start getting for shoulder DQ?? Thanks

You don't go to OTS in the summer, you will go to Field Training. OTS is not related to AFROTC... Once you are DQ your Commander will request a waiver for you, you need to talk to your Commander to start the process. I am going through this myself, just got two DQ's and my Commander requested a waiver on my behalf. If you have any records that might HELP you or notes from doctors where they clear you of your issue with the shoulder then start gathering those but DO NOT send anything else until the waivering Authority (Air Force Education and Training Command) asks for it. That's what my Commander told me...after you Commander requests the waiver you need to check either with him or much probably with the Human Resources Directorate at your Detachment for updates, also you need to check the DODMERB site for any updates too.
