Hi everyone,

So recently I was deemed disqualified for the medical portion of the application; however, I believe it's only because I had asthma during my younger days. Is there any way to find out what exactly I was disqualified for? The usma portal simply states the date I was disqualified and doesn't elaborate.

My regional commander said I was highly competitive (2380 sat, captain 3 school varsity teams, student council, debate, model un, newspaper, boys state, etc) so I would be very disappointed if I was not granted a chance at an appointment simply because of a condition I had in the past. Thank you.

You might check over in the DODMERB portion of these forums, for more specific advice.

Have you asked your RC if there can be a remedial review done by USMA regarding a possible waiver of whatever the DODMERB decision was?

The DODMERB forum area is the right place to check into the waiver process. I know in the past, there used to be someone on here who was directly connected with the application process who could provide insight on how to proceed. If he isn't still around, you might at least learn from prior posts how others went about this when they had similar issues.

Medical requirements for the academy/military are very strict for a lot of good reasons. Good grades really won't trump a medical condition that the academy deems is a disqualifier.

AR 40_501 - Standards of Medical Fitness

d. Asthma (493), including reactive airway disease, exercise-induced bronchospasm or asthmatic bronchitis, reliably
diagnosed and symptomatic after the 13th birthday, does not meet the standard. Reliable diagnostic criteria may include
any of the following elements: substantiated history of cough, wheeze, chest tightness, and/or dyspnea that persists or
recurs over a prolonged period of time, generally more than 12 months.

Ask your RC if he or she will request a waiver for you.

Suggest that you contact DODMERB directly. I have found them to be pretty quick to call you back if you have to leave a voicemail.

Link to their site is https://dodmerb.tricare.osd.mil/Default.aspx, and contacts on the left side will get you a phone number. They will need your SSN to access information.
